Bump stops??

Hi,
I,ve just OME,d my 2005 ST and love the overall package but I do have one question.
When I last had the exxie serviced Nissan told me my bump stops had had it.Would this be the reason that when I hit a pot hole with my Old Man setup I hear and feel a loud bang at front of car as though car is bottoming out on the suspension?
Any help greatly appreciated

Re:

Bump stops are rubber mounds screwed to be just under minimum suspension limits. These will stop major damage to the vehicle in the event you hit a bump at high speed/power, (or on the way out of potholes).

They are located on the top of the axle just inside of where the hubs are. Very hard to see from the outside normally.

If they are damaged they need to be replaced.

Re:

Thanks, but I have never come across these bump stops getting damaged on the exy, even for those of us who have taken their xtrails off-road, so this must be a design flaw of some sort in the OME suspension to cause this damage.

Re:

The only real way a bump stop gets damaged is via an accident or an extremely heavy landing on that wheel.

Re:

Multiple hits over time will degrade them, as they are not meant to be in constant use.

Possibly the car had been carrying heavier loads than what its limits are on softer springs in the past? This is the normal cause for excess wear and tear.

Check the locking rings on top of the strut cartridges, one of them may have come loose a bit. If one of them is loose, it can cause loud banging on outward travel. In that case you should jack the front up so you can reach it through the spring coils and using a large wrench thread the locking ring back in as hard as you can. The OME cartridges are secured in place within the stock strut assemblies with adapters and these locking rings that thread into them, at least on the T30.

Re: Bump stops??

I know this is an old thread but anyway I want to post my experience: My Xty is lowered for 40-50K kms ADN bumpstops are already ok.

They're fitted atop, inside the shocks dust covers, just like most Nissan strut assembly.
