Whips Wagon

Hi all,

Thought it was probably time to tell you a little bit about my exxy.

Leased the car through salary sacrifice (as per my previous 2 cars) and learnt that the best way was to put as many accessories on as I could afford. By doing that if I ever damage anything that was on the car when purchased I am able to replace it through my salary sacrifice account, which technically makes the replacement cost GST neutral. Also under salary sacrifice if accessories are added later they can not be funded through the account due to taxation rules.

All the following were on the car when purchased:

Nissan Genuine items

Nudge Bar;
Window tint all round;
Side Body Mouldings;
Smoke Bonnet Protector;
Driving Lights & Protectors;
Chrome exhaust tip;
Headlight protectors;
Rear bumper scuff plate;
Side Steps;
Roof spoiler;
Towbar Kit;
Tyre Step;
Bott storage Bag;
Left hand cargo drawer;
First Aid Kit;
Kicks plates for all four doors;
Rear protection tray;
Carpet and rubber mats;
Towball bag kit.

Auto One Bathurst supplied items

Rhino Roof Racks;
Roof basket;
IronMan awning;
Waeco 35l Fridge;
Waeco 12volt power kit;
Sheepskin seat covers;
4WD Hema Maps set;
Electronic Tyre Pressure guage.

Australian X-Trail supplied items

Bonnet struts;
bash plate set;
4 x smoked weather shields;
Strut bar;
Stubby Holders.

The only things I have purchased since are:
5 x 16" steel rims (from this website) - $500;
5 x 225/70/16 Yokohama Geolander AT's (Bob Jane Bathurst) - $1245 (fitted and balanced)
Bushranger Black Max Air Compressor (Ebay) - $240

After my recent trip to Broome and back the only thing I am now possibly considering is a lift kit.

Have attached some photos, when new and after the off road makeover for the trip to Broome.

Allan

Nice ride there, the only things missing is a 35mm lift, some LED mirror covers (am selling some if interested) and the car covered in dirt.
Those side awnings are great aren't they!

Re: Whips Wagon

Thanks Tony,

I'm going to work on a trip report for Broome so there should be some 'dirty' photos in there. Hadn't considered the LED mirror covers, will let you know if I'm interested.

The side awning was fantastic and almost as easy to put up single handed as it was with others helping. Wanted to get the fox wing originally, but because of the fixed spacing between the roof racks on my model they wouldn't guarantee the awning if something happened so rather than take a chance I settled on this one.

Only takes a few minutes to put up or take down. Can be a bit tricky though when you've set up camp, got the swag in exactly the right spot under the awning and then decide to go for a drive. Can be a bit fiddly trying to get the car and awning back into the exact same spot when you return lol.

Really good in the wind too. During the trip I set it up at Chambers Pillar, near Alice Springs, and the wind blew up during the night. I kept checking the awning, but it was fine. I should have been more concerned about my mate and his son who ended up with their tent folding down on them!!!

Hi Allan,

Very nice mate. Does the spare live on the roof basket full time or was this only for the trip? emoticon

Re: Whips Wagon

Thanks Jalal,

Only had the AT spare on the roof for the trip which gave me 2 spares, including the on-road. Having said that though I might consider looking into a spare wheel carrier as I carry my fridge in the car all the time and it can be a bit of a hassle getting everything out to get to the spare, not that I have had to so far, touch wood!

Re: Whips Wagon

Thought I'd update this with a few pics of some of the latest additions. I did get the light bar and a hi tech single cat back exhaust in the last 12 months.

Tyre Trek wheel carrier and dual jerry can holder

I'm preparing for a trip North to Birdsville and then possibly The Cape so decided to add a dual battery system with a compressor, all of which I've put in the spare tyre well. The compressor is pressurised so cuts in and out when being used and I've added a switch near the rear 12volt outlet, which I've also had connected to the 2nd battery. The air hose is readily accessible from the rear storage area on the driver's side and is about 9 metres long - plenty of length to reach the front on both sides.

Also added an oil catch can and a Donaldson water separator.

Not clever enough to do the battery and mechanicals myself so had an auto electrician fit the battery system and my mate, who is a mechanic, helped with the catch can and separator, so it wasn't a particularly cheap exercise. All up cost around $1700 - about $500 of that for labour.
