ARB Old Man Emu (OME) suspension issue

Hi All,

I had ARB fit OME springs to my 2011 Diesel X-Trail to give it approximately a 25mm height increase.

After 500KM, the springs all sagged into position, but the heights I got were a little strange.

The rears had about 30mm increase unloaded, whereas the fronts had 20mm on the left and 15mm on the right. Didn't really notice this discrepency until I went away on a trip.

Since that trip, the front right spring (15mm height increase) now makes a twanging noise when the steering wheel is turned through about the centre point of the steering when stopped or travelling at low speed. I've also been able to twist the spring by hand and can see it binding up near the top of the spring and 'pop' between two different positions, causing the twanging noise.

I've already been to ARB once, and they weren't quite sure why it is doing this, and I'm due to go back again so they can measure it up and check alignments etc.

Just wondering if:

- Any has fitted ARB OME suspension to their vehicle and if they had problems or not

- or can anyone provide any light on what might be causing the issue? I suspect the spring itself is the problem and is binding up. I can almost bet that ARB is probably going to try blaming the car or some other part. I'd love to go back armed with a little information about the problem and will also point out that I didn't get the 25mm lift that I should have.

Hopefully this should reduce any dramas I have.

Re:

The twanging noise is the spring rubbing or jerking on the underside of the strut tower (where the top of the coil and the strut meet).
There should be a spring insulator installed which is a piece of rubber that sits on top of the coil.

As for the different heights, OME are known to set unevenly compared to say Pedders but if your not happy with the front, get the installer to replace them.

Re:

I eventually took the car to another place for diagnosis - found that I have done the strut bearing in, which was causing it to bind.

$400 later and the bearing has been replaced.

Not too happy that ARB never followed up or returned phone calls. Also still not happy with the springs being under the stated height, but I just can't be bothered anymore following it up with ARB, and I'll live with the modest height increase for now. Obviously turned off from buying from ARB now, but I think thats more an indication of their customer service more than anything else.
