Re: T30 ti 02 5spd engine removal,stripdown and reassembly - Lots of pics -

Okay. I have located a gearbox with only 36000 km on the clock. 900 bucks locally. I hope the seals are good I've asked to throw in a free free passenger axle at that price cause my nut is screwed and it'll be a fresher wheel bearing. I have to remove the entire sub frame from under the car and remove the box that way. I just hope to god that I didn't damage any clutch stuff when I tried to get the box out with sub frame still in. I tell ya what tho it can almost be done and only about an inch or so more clearance.

Right.
I worked on the car this afternoon and I now have the Subframe down and the Gearbox ready to come out. It took about 3 Hours to do this which is not bad or overly hard with a rattle gun.

I bought a Transmission Jack attachment to use with my trolley jack for 100 bucks delivered off ebay which will make things alot easier on installation, prob about a week to get here.

I am still recieving quoted from those online parts search engines and the prices are ranging from $660 in QLD (lucky you guys) $990 NSW,delivered to perth. $1800 in Melb (I informed him that his price is double of other places and his response was 'Well people still buy em'.)

A forum member Col was very helpful by pointing me to one on Ebay for $500, 200 Delivery to WA. Thanks for that Col, i was just a bit concerned about the high kays (300 thou someting) and the muddy condition.

Ive ended up going with a place in WA for $900 plus a free axle. I have previously used these guys for a Throttle body which happens to be from the same car that the gearbox is from. It only had 36000 kays on the clock, which ive seen. Car doesnt even look that damaged.

Ive gotta scrape some coins together for the box so itll be another week or so til i get it.

Speak soon.

Scotty.

Re: T30 ti 02 5spd engine removal,stripdown and reassembly - Lots of pics -

Hello all.

Well I picked up the new gearbox and transferred all the bits off the old onto the new one. The seals were still in very good condition so I took the chance and used them. the throw out bearing was still good as the box had hardly been used.

I have since installed it as the tranny jack turned up and ive spent the last few days buried in the garage busting my gut to have this car done by christmas.

Everything went pretty well, its awkward working on only jack stands and ive now learnt that I can bend my arms and fingers in the strangest ways.lol.

So to cut a long story short... It was time to go for ignition. Jumped in the car and turned the key..... nothing happened! Hmmm... WTF.... id blown the 30A Ignition fuse somehow. I pulled the Multi Geeker Meter out and tested circuits to find out that i had put the Earth to the Gearbox on the Earth to the Starter Motor as they are the same looking plug.. der!!
There are no spares for these big Fuses so I used the ABS on and she worked fine until I can get another.

I took a big deep breath and turned the key and she roared to life. the timing chain rattled a bit but its because im using fairly thin Diesel Grade Oil.

I warmed it up and took it for an easy drive around the streets and evrything besides the big orange ABS light which didnt have a fuse in it went well.

So I progressively reved the engine up to redline over an hour or so giving the engine time to heat and cool between blasts.

It sounds great and for a 4wd its actually quite quick and spins the wheels through second gear if ya accel too hard. emoticon

So all in all, the engine has been broken in Very Hard and no leaks, squeals, clunks or bumps are evident which im Excstatic about as im exhausted playing mechanic and busting my knuckles.

I gave her a wash and a quick wax this morning and im going to treat her to a Chrome Exhaust Tip tomorrow.lol.

Im going to do another 200 kays or so before changing oil to the Penrite 'Running In' oil.
Ill do a compression test and post results after fully broken in.

Its been a long and testing experience to do this and especially to have to pull the Gearbox out again has tried my patience and ability, but has paid off and to look back over the last two and a half months of trying to find a few hours here or there to work on it,chase parts, sifting through forums,super-gluing cuts on my fingers back together all seems worth it now..

Thankyou all for looking and commenting. If you live in Perth WA, you might see me drivin round with the Big 'Running Engine In' on the back of the car.
(On a side note, I was following an old guy doing some blats on the Freeway and we pulled into the same servo, he wouldnt believe me that a new engine DOESNT need to be babied and that indeed should be 'driven like ya stole it' for a few hundred kays to seat evrything, maybe the Model Tford was a different story back then.lol.) emoticon

Right next... Maybe a stereo upgrade and some slotted rotors. Mmmm Pod filter, exhaust, throttle spacer... Aaah the lists go on. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Well Done Scott. I think you need to change your signature now "Currently in bits for a complete rebuild". How about "Running In New Engine". ;-)
