Re: Replace Gearbox,Transfer Case and Rear Diff Oils. T30 5sp 2002

Did all my oils today and was a little confused about what are the filler holes on the transfer case and gearbox on my T30.

On the gearbox people are filling from the top in the engine bay, but there is also a filler hole under the gearbox just near where the negative battery lead grounds to the gearbox. I used this one to fill the gearbox.

Also on the transfer case some people are using the socket square drive on top of the transfer case to fill the oil. I loosened off the small 12 mm bolt on the side of the t/case as shown in the photos in this thread, but ended up filling from within the engine bay via the larger hole on top. Found both these bolts for the t/case very difficult to access. I did the Crank Angle sensor the other day and it was a breeze compared to the t/case!

Xtrail now has 234,000km on the clock and this is the second time the drive train oils have been changed.

Re:

Hi, sorry to resurrect an old thread...

I am going to be changing the transfer fluid over the next few weeks and see that the ESM calls for liquid gasket Threebond 1215 or equivalent to be used on the drain and filler plug threads.

Can i ask what people have used here, if it is indeed required?

Struggling to find anything at a reasonable price here in UK

Thanks in advance!

Easiest thing to do is search for the specifications of the 1215 sealant and provided what you get matches or exceeds them then it should be OK.
Temperature range and gear oil resistance are probably the most critical things to match.

Thanks.
I have now found it on eBay, but it's not cheap.

Re:

Nice write up.
What drain plug washers did you use on the transfer case? From the parts diagram it does not look like it needs any.

Also did you need any for the gearbox filler bolt?

Where did you get your washers from?

Re:

Any idea with the T31 6SP Manual 4WD gearbox, I find it difficult to select 5th. I changed the gearbox oil with Penrite ProGear 75w85. The Service Manual (MA-67) says to check oil level with a special guage. From the illustration, I am guessing I measure from the top of the fill hole to the oil? If this is correct would it be the 85-90mm specified on TM-181?

Thanks

Hi EVEROCK,

Great post indeeed !!! Photos always help tremendously. I'm just a little confused as I've seen an Australian YouTube in which the transfer case filler plug needed a SQUARE allen key as opposed to a regular hexagoinal one. My Exy is a 2007/8 GX 2.5 lt. (model sold in Brazil) and the the filler plug seems to have a bolt head rather than a socket. I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks again. Brian Hazlehurst in Rio de Janeiro.

Hi there.
Sorry for resurrecting this old thread but I guess I have the same issue here. And I cant see the pics in the first post.
So I tried taking some pics of the transfer case. Not sure if this actually the case?
I'm almost sure the one in the green circle is the drain, not sure about the filling plug though. The one in red?
