Re: Rebuild 2002 T30Ti Cylinder Head
Hi all.
Ive been shopping to get new parts for the re-build.
After dismantling the head and taking all the valves and springs etc out I found that most of the valves were either burnt or badly pitted.
To remove the valve collets I just placed a socket over the valve hat a gave a solid knock to release the collets.
I removed the springs and valves and kept them in order.
Next i sent the head in to the machine shop for
- Crack test
- Pressure test
- Acid clean
- Machining of flat faces
All this cost $250.00 and I think its a good piece of mind step.
I also ordered:
- Head Gasket Top Set $220.00 (Vv stem seal,intake/exhaust gaskets,Injector o-rings,water Pp gasket, thermostat gasket and throttle body gasket.
- Head bolts $150.00
- New water Pump $150.00
- Belt tensioner pulley $20.00 (Same as Vp Commodore)
- Intake/exhaust Valves $230.00
- Crankshaft seal $35.00
- Engine Belt $50.00
I have also bought a few things which will be needed to do this yourself.
- Valve spring Compressor ( Big NOTE.. Buy this tool, not the big 'C' clamp from supercheap as it will not work) This 'Blue Point tool is $70.00 from Snap-On website and is the best 70 bucks you will spend for this job.)
- Valve grinding tool $10.00
- Valve grinding paste. Corse and fine $10.00
- Heaps of degreaser $20.00
- Spray gasket dissolver $15.00
- Spray water disperasant/Lube $4.00
- Big bag of lint free rags $12.00
- RV Gasket Silicon $15.00
- removeable Thread Locker $10.00
- Assembly Lube oil (Lucas is a good one) $20.00
- Brake cleaner $15.00 (Good for cleaning parts and surfaces)
- Paint marker pen $8.00
- Nissan coolant and filters $45 for three bottles makes 5Litres and $20.00 for oil filter
- About 15Litres of distilled water (for flushing and cleaning etc)
Also note that you will need basic tools for this
- All the standard metric sockets and spanners (ratchet spanners makes it everything alot easier)
- Basic screwdrivers
- Torque wrench x 2 (some torques are as low as 20Nm and some as high as 100Nm.
- Hex socket with half Inch drive adaptor and long extension bar (for head bolts).
- Inside and outside micrometer (Not completely necessary but good for checking tolerances.
- Straight Edge
- Feeler gauges

Re:
Scott,
This is turning out to be the bedt DIY guide I have seen on this forum. All the right information, tool to use and parts to buy.
Keep it up mate and hope that the assembly gods are with you.

Re: Rebuild 2002 T30Ti Cylinder Head
Gday all. thanks for all the responses and views.
Well I guess the easier bit of taking it all apart is nearly complete.
So far it has gone fairly smoothly and havent broken or lost anything.
The costs do start to add up quickly but if Nissan had to buy and install valves, seals, water pump, new thermostats and many other things that the cost would have seriously skyrocketed.
This is a labour intensive exercise if you want to be thorough but I just cant see a mechanic that it isnt his car take the time to really clean bits up and be thorough.IMO which I can understand.
I have the head back and it looks nice and clean. I was a little dissapointed and concerned tho. They simply gave me a hand written receipt for the costs but there was no official measurements or results to even show that the tests I asked for were completed.(surely their computers have a print button when a measurement is taken). They just said, 'Shes all good' sort of thing. Not sure what the norm is with head recon but I know if I went to the doctors and had a test to see what was wrong with me that I would have some sort of results with an explanation of it. Mmmm.maybe too fussy... End rant.... Im just very wary lately. I have an Mitsubishi Evolution9 that went in for a respray and they completely ruined the cars paint (overspray, fish eyes, orange peel, damage to rubber trims, deeply scratched exterior windows and a rediculously high amount of polish builup left around the car. Anyhoo...
Right, lets put all these bits back together...

Re: Rebuild 2002 T30Ti Cylinder Head
The head is all noice and clean, flat and fit for service, apparently!. ha.
I forgot to mention to take the valve stem seals out too, pair of pliers will do the job.
Be very careful with the head and only place it obviously on a surface that is softer.
Give it a quick degrease and wipe down just to be sure theres no swarf bits.
You will now have to re-seat and cut in the valve seats to mate up with the head to ensure a good seal. To those that havent done this before it is really not that hard.(youtube has lots of video).
You take your suction cap valve tool and suction it to the valve head and apply coarse grinding paste to the face and to the head seat.
Carefully replace the valve into the head guide and firmly spin (like trying to light a fire with a stick) in the face. Its messy but itll leave a nice even wear line, repeat with the fine paste. Just remember that you dont need lots of paste and you should beable to hear when its seated(although sound is not an indicator only)
Do this with all the valves (will take quite a few beers)
Clean everything again and install new Vv stem seals with assembly lube. Slide lubed up valves into head and replace valve spring and hats (Lube is definately ur friend here)
Take your 'Blue Point' valve spring compressor! and place the collets into the housing and simply compress the spring with a small rubber block holding the valve head and push til you hear them click into place.(about ten seconds per valve). Before I got this tool I prob screwed round for about an hour and still couldnt get the collets in place with conventional clamp.
Woo Hoo, all valve train back together.
This is a good time to replace your new Water Pump and Belt tensioner, I also took the time to clean the block and measure it. Also clean everything around front cover.
Carefully wipe the two open cylinders with brake cleaner, transmission oil (as it has a detergeant in it) and inspect for damage, measure and recoat with assembly lube after giving everything a vacuum... yes vacuum. swarf=bang=booo.
Cover clean block with glad wrap or something.
Next is to put the head back on and assemble the Cams and sprockets.
Hope my rambling makes some sort of sense. Its late and the wine just keeps tasting better,

Re:
Theres nothing like a freshly machined head, I reckon it looks better than new.
Mate I think you missed your calling, you should have been a grease monkey.
If you want the details from the machine shop, just ask for them.
Every time I get a hand written reciept I think dodgey thoughts too, it all used to be like that once upon a time.
Keep up the good work and make sure you check at least 5 times that the timing marks line up, both Nissans and your white dots.

Re: Rebuild 2002 T30Ti Cylinder Head
Yeah its all noice and shiny and looks great with the new valves and clean oil over it.
Im kind of a grease monkey already but dont normally do engines, im a fabricator by trade but work on different stuff like Fuel systems, reverse osmosis, hydraulic and pneumatic machinery on boats.
The mechanic shop where I bought most of parts from took the head to their machinist and tacked a bit on the end. I nicely questioned the owner about the process but said they rarely give the measurements unless asked for. Damn, if I didnt have to record and submit numbers my days work would be much easier. Meh! he had a Ferrari in the shop so I doubt he uses dodgy bros the more I think about it.
Im a step ahead with writing this thread and I have put the head back on and timed it all up and yep I think I checked it many times. I think I actually stared at it with a million things that could be wrong. What did suck was that a couple of paint marks 'fell off' which made a certain bodily valve pucker up a bit. Thankfully the gold links and the indents on the Cam cogs were to match up as well.
Ive decided to change the Transmission, transfer case and rear diff oils while im in DIY mode.
It doesnt look too hard and itll be a good all round freshen up.
Cheers,

Re:
Reverse osmosis, thats the coolest thing I've seen, doesn't take long to make the fresh stuff.
You should live near a beach and make your H2O.
