Re:
Don't go there Scott, removing the double timing chains (including the one that runs through the balancer shafts) is not fun

Re: Rebuild 2002 T30Ti Cylinder Head
Haha thankyou, I think thats the best advice, I was just flicking through some manuals for QRs and holy hell. im not touching it. It would require alot of time and when you think about it, new crank shells on a fairly worn crank would possibly cause more scuffing and excessive 'new' play.
I would really like to do this but the costs and time are huge with engine still in.
Good idea on cars without balancer tho and is definately noteworthy.

Re: Rebuild 2002 T30Ti Cylinder Head
Right! The fun bits....
Everything that connects the head is off beside the timing gear.
Next important step is to make sure the No1 and 4 Piston are at TDC again. Rotate the engine forwards until its on the compression stroke.
Mark the Crank with paint marker and check the indent marks on the crank pulley line up with raised mark on block cast.
Next remove the camsprockets cover, nice and evenly as its aluminium.
Mark the Sprockets with your paint pen at the Gold marks on the chain, and various positions on the chain and sprocket
Now our little friend the Timing Chain Tensioner. I removed it as I found it damn near impossible to compress that piston lug back into housing and lock with a paper clip. I just removed it via few bolts and made damn sure that all the bits didnt fall into engine cover
Remove plastic chain guide(Ahhh!. This could be the issue with some engines rattling if broken or not seated correctly)
Make sure that the Cam Lobes over No1 Cylinder In/Ex are pointing outwards, if their not, rotate the engine until they are. You may have to do this a few times as the ratio from crank to cam is staggered. If that makes sense sorry.
Remove the Camshaft bearing cover evenly
Now the Camshafts can be removed and the Timing Chain secured of the sprockets.
Take your 24mm Spanner (not a shifter like me as late Sunday sucks for buying parts) and long series socket set and loosen the sprokets securing bolts (yep bloody tight)
Crack the nut loose and then carefully pull the Timing chain of the Sprockets and secure to the front cover with a cable tie in a few spots. Apparently the chain cannot come off the Crank as no room but knowing my luck.lol.
Completely remove the Sprockets
Stay tuned for more Xtrail fun....
Cheers.

Re: Rebuild 2002 T30Ti Cylinder Head
Hi all,
Well the Timing gear has all been removed and secured. I then removed the Camshafts and was quite a delicate procedure as I really didnt want to nick the bearing cases or bend the cams.
I removed the bearing caps in a cross over pattern little by little until all the bolts were loose. Then removed the caps and kept them in order as not to mix them up.
Next the camshafts should lift straight out, the Intake cam has a small flange on the end which works with the camshaft position sensor.
Set everything aside in order of removal for inspection and cleaning later.
when the Cams are removed you can see the Valve Lifters which are small caps that just sit over the valve spring and hat. These can easily be removed by inserting a paperclip into the hole in the top to relieve the oil suction pressure and drawn out. Very important to keep these aside in order of removal as although they look the same, they are actually all very slightly different in weight and height.
These are what people refer to when they say that their engine is tappety on hydraulic lifter engines. These cannot be adjusted, just replaced if out of spec.
Remove the camshaft position sensor from the head via a bolt and connector.
Right...
The Head...
Remove the Head bolts in correct sequence from the manual.(easier said than done) and pray again to the Nissan Gods that none of them will snap cause you might as well turn it into an expensive garden ornament or buy yourself a new engine, gulp...
My head bolts were rediculously tight and I kept stripping my cheap 10mm Hex socket.
I ended up using a 'Snap-On' 10mm Hex Key and a 400mm wrench as leverage. It works but holy hell I was knackered after I just cracked them a tiny bit loose.
after you have removed them evenly the head will lift off the block but be very careful as there are two locating collets that fell out a I did this.(Pull the head towards the gearbox so that those collets dont fall into the Front cover)
Lots of carbon on pistons and valves, im pretty sure ive got to replace the valves from this .
You will notice that valves on cylinder 1 are white. This is from coolant sitting on the piston and its been trying to compress it. Its just lucky I didnt completely have this snapped or severly bent. Im kind of relieved at this stage as its obvious from the head gasket that coolant has leaked through the gasket.
Next I will be Inspecting all my parts and going shopping for new bits! im going to try and get away for under a grand to do this.

Re:
Good work Scott.
By looking at your head bolts it might be worth buying new ones and maybe a good tool to do the up.
Thats the easy bit, now the fun starts.

Re:
Good to see that Nissan are still using the same style head bolts as my first car (1977 180B), at least I know that 10mm hex driver can still be of use.
