Re: Fuel Pump
There is only one fuel pump in the Xtrail and for the diesel it is the one you indicated, next to the fuel tank under the rear.
Other than that there is a manual priming pump ontop of the filter in the engine bay.

Re: fuelpump,location ?
hi all, gromit 2011,x2261 here up north and totally perplexed.i have 2008,extrail,tsdci.have just changed fuelfilter and can now understand why dealer's mechanically bewildered staff ignored to replace filter even though on service list.now, can someone explain to me,why, when i have an electric fuelpump in tank do i have to hand prime fuelsystem via the bulb on top of filter.the m9r engine system as shown on utube and other it net locations shows fuelrail and piping as well as what seems to be a small high pressure pump mounted on top of transmission housing. please help if someone can.this entrail of mine is turning into a labour of love and should have been sold in kit form as a diy.have a good weekend, greetings to all.

Re: fuelpump,location ?
The hand prime bulb type is really only to prime the lines if for example you have opened the drain valve on the filter assembly and need to refill the filter 'bowl'. Refer my post in Fuel & Oil after I accidentally put petrol in and had to drain, flush lines etc. The fuel pump is in the RH comparment in the tank.
Under normal operation the priming bulb is not required and you will notice it takes about 6 presses to 'firm' up if there are no line leaks.
I can hardly hear the fuel pump when it is working, so not sure what the ticking noise is you are hearing. Hope this helps Agree with you that the filter assy is not the easiest item to replace mainly because of the quick disconnect fuel connections, which really require the appropriate pliers.

Re: location fuelpump
Hi gromit
Yes I located the same high pressure fuel pump (page EM-291) in the service manual. There is a pump in the sender unit which suggests it is more for priming the line.
Be interested to know if you have sourced a part no for the pump. I think following my unfortunate episode of putting petrol into my diesel and then doing nealry 100kms this pump has some issues. Interestingly the fault has started manifesting itself after about 200kms of driving after a complete clean, filter change and new diesel, as an unexpected stalling of the engine after idling. While running on the fwy no issues - when I come to a stop and do some stop/start in traffic - the revs suddenly drop off and the engine stalls. Starts straightaway but totally unpredictable - even if I keep revs up and drop them, it will sometimes stall.
Experienced diesel mechanic says it is almost certainly the pump and that the problem will actually get worse - suggests the new design pumps are probably not repairable but replaced.
Any suggestions would be great.

Re: Re:
Not yet Jalal
I will have a closer look at it - looks like it is a Bosch item. I will investigate either having refurbished or exchanged. We have a very good diesel injection repair company here in Perth and I am inclined to go to them before the dealer in this instance.
I am interested that when I replace the pump, if an ECU reset will achieve anything? The manual doesn't suggest anything.
When the engine stalls, no warning lights come prior to or after.

Re:
John, it could be as simple as cleaning or replacing the injectors. Did your mechanic check them?
