QR 25 Bottom end bearings

Hi there exy fans,

just wondering has anyone had a bottom end or conrod bearing let go?
i had just replaced the head gasket in my exy and had driven <5000kms and now i have done a bearing in the bottom end.

is this a common problem with the qr25? or am i just unlucky?

if anyone has had one go what was it worth to fix?

cheers Arron

Re:

not a common problem as far as i know.

odds are if the head gasket and bearings have gone, you have a more sinister problem... Bearings just don't fail like that, so odds are there's a bigger problem in there somewhere. bearings usually go because of low oil, failed oil pump, blocked oil galleries or something. maybe when the headgasket went you had water contaminating the oil, now that water has been circulating through your oil galleries, or maybe a piece of gasket material even. QR25s have pretty much bulletproof lubrication systems.

It'd be cheaper and more effective to put a new motor in, rebuilding the bottom end is gonna cost ALOT. The motor obviously has to come out, sump off, crank out and re-assembly, you're looking at thousands. A new motor could be had for less than $1500 bucks from a wrecker, installation isn't much compared to a rebuild. Plus if you have a low km motor in there, it'll add resale value too.

Make sure if you do get the bottom end re-built, to get the mechanic to try and find the original cause of the failure.

Re: QR 25 Bottom end bearings

Hey Arron,

My x trail was using alot of engine oil and also had a rattle in the engine somewhere!
I stripped it in the car, found number 3 piston rings baked in and the conrod bearing was damaged. Now my engine has 195000km and a friend of mine who worked for nissan said number 3 hey, without me even telling him!He said hes done 4 rebuilds due to bearing failure.I dont think my x trail was looked after but saying that it has a service history at nissan.Wrong oils can cause bores to glaze, use oil then run dry.All i did was new pistons and rings, new big end bearings and a hone of the cylinders, then i had the head done up and a few guides replaced and other nick nak stuff and all came under $1000.00 for parts. So if you do it yourself your laughing, but a mechanic like some of the people i work with will slug you.I couldnt find an engine for less than $1800.You may get lucky and find one of the conrod bearings in the end two cylinders are damaged but you'd be silly not to do the lot!!.It just depends on how much you want to spend and if you want to keep the car...

Good luck

Adam
