17" tyres for T31's.

Hello all,
I am seriously considering purchasing a new X-trail...T31 diesel if it all works out as I plan.
I have a nagging worry re the tyres on the latest T31 diesels.
17" road tyres & 16" spare.
Are there any standard size AT or HT tyres available in 17" diameter?
If so, what is available & what is recommended by Forum Members?
Is the 16" spare a temporary space saver or the same as earlier model 16" wheel/tyre combos?
If 17" AT or HT are not available, is a change to 16" OEM X-Trail wheels a viable solution?
Any feedback would be appreciated.
If 17" AT or HT tyres are not available, I will seriously have to reconsider purchasing a new X-Trail.
Regards,
Richard.

Hi Richard,

The answer is that you should purchase a set of 2nd hand 16" rims from the previous T30 model and get tyres to match because there almost no selection of AT or HT tyes in the 17" size and if you find them, they'll be very expensive.

It's much more economical to downsize to 16" rims.

Am doing the same with my new Ti T31 xtrail which comes with 18" tyres and a 16" spare.

Re: 17" tyres for T31's.

So are there no 17" AT/HT tyres available ?
I thought that Yokohama made a 17" AT/HT tyre in the OEM X-Trail sze.

So, if I buy a set of 16" wheels for gravel road work, which series 16" wheels are the best or doesn't it matter?
Are any of the OEM 16" wheels weaker (or stronger) than the rest?
How do I identify which series wheels are which...I believe there are square & round section spokes .

And will the OEM 16" wheels fit over the T31 discs with sufficient clearance?

And the T31 16" spare....is it a temporary spacesaver 80kph rated type or is it the same as the general-use 16" steel as used as road wheels on earlier series X-Trails?

I am really only interested in fitting OEM wheels...not aftermarket types.

Ta,
Richard.

Re:

Richard,

Am sure you can find some 17" tyres but your selection will be very much limited and that will of course push the price up and for the price of 4 17" A/T tyres (if you find them) you can score 2 sets (that's right 8 wheels and tyres) in the 16" size from a T30 xtrail (2nd hand). Do the maths and the decision is pretty much made for you emoticon

All T30 X-Trail (Series 1 and 2) 16" alloy wheels will fit the T31 without any problems and/or modifications. They have a compatible offset and bolt pattern. The Series 1 are the round 5 spoke and Series 2 are the square 5 spoke 16" wheels. The shape and look of the wheel doesn't impact on its performance in gravel at all. It's just a personal taste as to which style you like best.

Time to hit the wreckers and eBay mate and start your hunt for some 16" xtrail wheels and tyres.

Your existing 16" tyre will be used as a road tyre when you convert to 16" wheels and tyres. It is speed rated at the moment because it is a different size that your other 17" wheels.

Re:

Im looking at my bridgestone tyre fitment guide that I have

There are only 2 choices that it shows for 17" rims

215/60/17
235/55/17

These are both only H/P Sport for 100% onroad and nothing else

In 16's they have a far greater range

215/65/16 - H/P Sport - D683/D687/D689 90% / 10% Road / Offroad - D693 - 70%/30% On / Off Road
235/60/16 - D683 / D694

It would be much better to go down to a 16" rim to get a larger range of tyres.

Cheers

You've answered your own question regarding if a 16' has clearance.
They wouldn't give you a 16' spare if it wasn't going to fit on the car.

There are 17' A/Ts but they are pricey, just over the $300 mark. Some members have gone down this path. To find out who, you just have to do a bit of reading.

Re: 17" tyres for T31's.

A very interesting thread...

I'll be up for four new on my R17s later this year. I was considering Yokohama Geolander AT/S which comes in 215/60R17 and 225/60R17.

But I find the thought of getting a set of 16" steels with Yoko ATs quite interesting too. Especially from a cost point of view. I'm assuming somewhere buried in the replacement tyres thread there's a discusson on price - but I can just e-mail the local tyre dealer about them anyway.

Where do you pick up a good set of second-hand 16" rims? How do you know that they haven't been treated rather badly?

Re:

Andy,

2 places to look for them: eBay and Wreckers. Nothing will be wrong with these alloys structurally, as they're 4WD load rated, so you only need to look for obvious signs of damage and cracks (if any).

Re:

There will be no dramas with steel rims. If they are damaged like a ding then alarm bells should ring as the rim can be buckled, your pretty safe I think.

Re: 17" tyres for T31's.

With regards to the supplied spare, it is speed rated - reduced - compared to the other tyres.
It is a purpose built spare, although full size - not a bicycle tyre space saver type.
I can't recall the specifications on it at the moment, other than it is supposed to be filled to 44psi (I remember because it looked odd - but its on the sidewall)
