X-Trail Seriously Downhill

There was some discussion somewhere here about the advantage of a Low Range 4WD in going down long descents in that it avoids brake overheating etc in a hill descent mode car like the X-Trail that uses the Brakes controlled by the computer to limit the speed and control traction etc.

Low Range 4WD will always be the ultimate performance wise BUT X-Trail in 4WD Lock, (No Hill Descent as it looks like a T30 dashboard) and lowest gear I presume (just guessing):

Have a look at this

Re:

I wonder where that is. The couple are speaking Russian and the driver is saying how scared he is and his lady companion mentions that her ears are popping (am not surprised), but it's not in Russia because the exy they're driving is RHD and has the left fender mirror (Japan spec).

Yeah I know, that's his profile and I know he's (they're) Russian but that is not in Russia because Russia is left hand drive.

Gotcha. I've sent him a message so maybe he'll be kind enough to let us know where it was filmed. Should be a good place for a forum members "Meet-Up"!!!!! to check out our cars.

Re:

I think I know where this is, based on his second video and the description of it, this video was taken in Mount Athos in Greece (The Holy Mountain) and I think it'll be a bit far for a forum outing LOL emoticon

quote:

Geography

Mount Athos is situated in the entire third, eastern and most beautiful peninsula of Halkidiki, called the peninsula of Athos. It is the only place in Greece that is completely dedicated to prayer and worship of God.
For this reason, it is called the Holy Mount.
The Holy Mount is about 50 Km in length, 8 to 12 Km in width and it covers an area of about 350 square kilometres.
The borders of the monasterial city are defined on the ground by an imaginary line that starts from the location "FRAGOKASTRO" in the West coast and reaches the cape "ARAPIS" in the opposite end.
The natural beauty of the peninsula is extraordinary. The highest point of Mount Athos is like a huge cone, reaching 2033 metres in height. It’s a naked, treeless crest that seems to lance the sky and its slopes are fully covered by ancient evergreens. All these help to create an area of incomparable natural beauty.

I wondered about that too.

Google Earth just about confirms this:

Re: X-Trail Seriously Downhill

This is a graded dirt road. Yes it might be steepish in places and a long decent, but not severe enough I would think for hill-descent use. There are planty of places where the grade levels off to allow brakes to cool and as you say, with 1st gear engine braking would take an amount of load off the brakes to reduce any heat buildup also.
