Re:
Hi Chris,
With the T30 automatic transmission, selecting AUTO mode can be done while in motion but it is best done when not accelerating or when the car is about to change gears, so the best time to do so is when the car is cruising in a steady pace. Am sure the T31 Automatic is the same.

Re:
My dealer told me when I brought the car that auto mode can be selected at a speed less than 100 km/h.
Over the speed the light won't come on.
I think I misread the question, is it about the auto transmision or is it about the 4wd auto lock you are talking about.

Re:
Tony,
The question relates to the diesel 6 speed auto transmission and the ability to select AUTO mode, which should be the same as it is the case with the T30 automatic xtrails sharing the same conventional transmission.
If you're saying the process is the same for the CVT when selecting the AUTO mode, then that's cool.

Re:
Yes it is about the AUTO selection mode, but the questions raised by a T31 driver of an Automatic diesel car. I hope that makes sense now LOL

Re: Selecting Auto Mode on the go?
Chris,
I don't have an automatic diesel, but the manual variant. Even so the 4wd selection system shouldn't be different.
You can definitely change to auto whilst driving - I have done it many times, however you shouldn't be doing whilst changing speed or under load. Something about confusing the computer, and also if there's a condition where a front wheel slip is detected the viscous clutch may engage very suddenly - probably not the best thing for it.
I've made the change when travelling off the bitumen onto the gravel, and also when hit with a heavy downpour. Each time with no problems.
There is a cut-off speed where the computer will not transfer power to the rear wheels - for some reason 80 km/h rings a bell, but given how late it is at the moment there's all sorts of bells going off in my head.
DON'T select LOCK whilst moving. Sorry for the capitals, but just making it clear. Lock fully engages the viscous clutch immediately, and I don't even want to know what that will do to your transmission if you're moving.
Happy driving.
