Vibration from back end at 100km/hr?

Saw some similar threads but all seemed to be talking about vibration while braking, whereas this was at speed.

Last night I was driving home along the freeway and the car felt like I had the back brakes on, and the front wheels were dragging me along at 100km/hr... any ideas? I pulled over into the emergency lane and sat for a few minutes, and then it was fine for the rest of the ride home. But that's not normal!!!

The bit about where it felt like the rear brakes were on... the only similar-feeling experience I've had driving a car is where I tried to take off with the handbrake fully engaged, while on gravel. Except in that case i was doing 0km/hr, and in this case, 100... but the feeling in the drivers seat was quite similar.

It was pretty quick and i was tired. Um, it started out of nowhere... I wasn't braking at the time when the vibration started - I was actually just on cruise control around 98km/hr in 4x4 auto mod and it just sort of started vibrating... I didn't feel the car rev up or anything like that.

Pulled over and it seemed to fix itself, it seemed to still be doing it as I slowed down but I might be wrong. As I was pulling into the emergency lane I could hear a "tick tick tick tick" kind of noise, at the same speed as the wheels were spinning. I heard it the other day driving into my driveway as well actually, but without the vibration.

State roads pre-inspection check says that the bearings look ok, there's a bit of wear at the bushes but they're in fair condition. The appropriate page from the report: http://i692.photobucket.com/albums/vv287/fwerfwater/249806nissanxtrail.jpg (If it turns out the report is wrong, state roads claim that "We provide a 30 day warranty to give you a peace of mind over the quality of our work." and the report was done on the 5th).

Brand new tyres, Maxxis MA-P1's as I'm a cheapskate. RWC done by my own mechanic - who also owns an Exy.

Re:

i'm a total car noob! how would i go about checking that?

what worries me is that it's an intermittent thing - that i only noticed the vibration once in a week of driving and the clicking twice in a week of uh, braking to a stop.

Could be your rear splines that may need attention!

The ticking when braking could be your rear brake pads moving around in the caliper.

Have your mechanic check your rear brakes to make sure the pads are correctly seated and that the pistons in the calipers are aligned and do not jamb.

Another thing to have them check would be your rear drive shaft CV boots and CV joints to make sure there are no splits in the boots and that the grease has not been spun out. If the CV joints run dry for any length of time then they will cause a vibration as mine did in the front.

Re:

The rear discs could be warped as well and may need re machining or replacing.
The wheel bearing could be on the way out.

Re:

Mechanics checked it out, everything seems to be in order! They think the handbrake might have been a little too tight and therefore not coming right off when the handle was all the way down - dragging on the back wheels and causing vibration. So they've adjusted the handbrake. Everything else looks fine according to them...

Re:

i was gonna say handbrake issue associated with warped rotors.
you generally dont have an issue with pad movement unless you run slotted discs.

And the ticking may well have been my keys flopping around, lol. But i'll see if that one comes back.

Re:

The ticking could also mean worn brake shoes as the little piece of steel touches the discs to inform the driver to change the pads.
I know they are on the front but not too sure if the rear has them as well.
