Starting problem

Hi all,

I have this current issue with my exy and would like to know if anyone has answers to what it is doing!

This problem started when I went to leave work Thursday morning and has continued on.

When I go to start the car it acts like it is a flat battery it literally drains the current to the point of no dash lights and it sits there just cranking over for around 10 seconds then starts up.

Once I have it started up the only lights left on the dash is the ones with the slippery car and ESP off lights and they do not go out unless I stop the car and restart it(once it starts I do not have this problem starting if I restart straight away)

The car was taken back to the dealers on short notice on Thursday and they did find the positive terminal loose and they also checked for error codes but found nothing and the battery and alternator were also checked!

The car is re-booked to go back to them on Monday but would like to know what your thoughts are on this and what it could be!

I have one thought that it could be the starter motor solenoid ready to give in or a solenoid in the alternator but the latter does not fit as I am sure your headlights do go dim if this is the case!

Regards Scot

Re:

What was the result of the battery test? what's the voltage? Have they checked the alternator to make sure it's charging the battery correctly?

Yes all were tested and voltage normal and as stated above no error codes!

OK then Scot, let them check the dreaded crank sensor and starter motor, I just hope the problems we had in the T30 models will not repeat themselves all over again with the T31 emoticon

Thanks Jalal and will get them to check the sensors as well!

OK Scot, 2 things incorrect with this...
1. If the engine is cranking over then the solenoid in the starter motor is fine as what it does is to push the pinion gear out to mate with the flywheel.
2. There is no solenoid in an alternator.

This sounds like a lubrication problem. When "cold" the engine has extra friction and takes a lot of cranking current from the battery but when it has started, oil has been pumped to bearings and mating cylinder walls and the engine starts with little effort.

I would check what type of oil was used, maybe wrong grade for your temp range, and also any connections to the starter which may be either corroded or looser than they should be.

Has it started since the dramas started Scot?
If not, check the fuses in the engine bay, one may have blown. Even check that your reverse lights are working, stranger things have been linked to one of them blowing.

Re:

This problem first arose Thursday when leaving for work and the only modification I have done to the car is the weather shields and know for the life of me that would have no impact but just wanted to be clear nothing has been touched recently on the mechanical side or electrical side!

As for fuses would a error code come up if one was blown?

Re:

I'd go looking at the fuses to make sure none are blown and they are the correct rating for the position.
Also make sure all main electrical connections are tight and not corroded.

Another thing is what else is on the 12V circuit throughout the car?
Car fridge plugged in when not in use or is there a 12v power board/multi socket unit in a 12V socket. (becareful of these if you have this sort of problem, they can melt internally and cause all sorts of issues with starting).
Many problems occur when people increase the fuse for this to higher than rated; without understanding what they are doing or simply using what is handy and not replacing it with the correct size as soon as possible.

Check the connections to lights where possible, as vibration may have loosened one over time and it is either shorting to the frame or to another point but shaking itself back into position under normal use.

People would be suprised the weird things that turn up from a loose power connection.
