Is this a good deal?
Hi all,
Thought i would share it with those of you who are interested.
I am due for tyres shortly (next few months) and after reading the forums I rang around and priced a set of Yoko Geolander A/T and a set of Coopers AT. The Geos best price was $286 fitted and balanced and the Coopers were $279 fitted and balanced, this is for 235/70R16's.
After speaking with some guys from work, who fit well into the hoon catergory, I was directed to a site called Tirerack.com. They have bought with these guys previously as such are a reputable company.
A quick look on there shows Geo's at $105.00 each and Coopers at $115 each.
I enquired about shipping for 5 Geos and this was my reply:
quote: The shipping via Fedex Intl Economy will be 365.05 making for a delivered total of $890.05 US. Transit is estimated at 3-5 business days and orders ship within 1-2 business days of receiving payment.
So i will be getting mine from overseas saving over 500 bucks less fitting and balancing.
Just thought i would put it out there, with the good Aussie dollar its well worth looking at.
Cheers

Re:
Just make sure you don't end-up paying customs duty on them more than the cost of the tyres themselves.

Re:
When I was getting prices for my Geo (17's) when I called Bob Jane to get a price from them, I said I can get them $15 cheaper than what he quoted, and he said that Bob Jane will beat any price guaranteed. When I said that I could get them for $290 he said that a lot of places are importing the tyres themselves from overseas. But Bob Jane needs to honor their guarantee so I got them for $285
The only problem getting the tyres from a non-authorised dealer for the Geo's is that you don't get the Yoko warranty. But for $105 per tyre I would forget about the warranty.

Re:
Oh, the other thing you must check is Australian compliance with imported tyres. Usually all tyres imported by the local tyre places get complied locally with a stamp on the tyre or a marking (DOT). You run the risk of either not passing rego or having your insurance claimed denied. I would check with insurance on their stance on imported tyres.
Personally, I wouldn't risk buying tyres from overseas, they could be re-treads for all you know.

Re:
Dave,
We're not attacking this business in particular, but the whole idea of importing tyres from overseas (as personal import). Unless you are getting super low profile tyres which cost thousands of Dollars for a race car or that "hoon" car, I don't see it being worth the risk, especially when there is no warranty involved. What happens if you get a tyre that has structural defects (and this can heppen in any brand of tyres)? Will they pay you to ship it back to them and have it replaced? I doubt it.
