Your suggestion is a Good One - and I have had this mentioned to Me before - But the damage to my Xtrail is mainly being caused when people reverse into it when Parking - Usually NOT a Direct from behind `Hit` - Usually they reverse into the corner third of the Bumper - Sorry about the description - I hope that You know what I mean. Since the severe cracks have been caused there have been Impacts / Pushing onto the Bumper which are causing these Cracks to become worse. The Problem seems to be that every day there are spaces being left in front and behind My Xtrail which are too small for all but the smallest of Vehicles with a good driver to get into - These spaces are attempted by People who either are not good enough Drivers - Or the Vehicles are too big for the Space - They find out when They `Hit` My Xtrail ! Thanks very much for Your suggestion - I do appreciate it. I used to have a Nissan Urvan and suffered the same thing with some mental pygmy hitting the back bumper and also denting the back tailgate door more than once. So I fitted a towbar and beefed it up a bit by welding a length of 9m/m thick RS Angle across the back therefore strengthening the towbar. I also fitted additional 9m/m plates where the holding bolts went thro' the chassis.. Then with the tongue and the towball protruding out, suddenly the damage stopped.. But I did see some paint marks on my towball.. Worth a thought mate.... London - A `Normal Side Road` - Although it is near a Parade of Shops and a Railway Station - This is in a `Desirable Area` regarding `High Property Prices` etc - There is NOTHING that One could `Look At` that would Flag Up where I usually Park as an `At Risk` Place - Except for the Fact that at Present My Xtrail is Parked outside My Home All Day Monday to Friday -Unlike most People who live in My Road - Who use their Cars Every Day - So am I `At Risk` more because there are possibly 8 to 12 Vehicles per Day Parking behind and in Front of My Xtrail - I suppose the Answer is `Obviously Yes`. I am not aware of anyone ever having Reversed into the FRONT of My Xtrail - Always the REAR - Which is `Lucky` I suppose - Or I would have Damage `Front and Back ! - But I stll find it `Unusual`. You mentioned that even with the `Bars` that I would like to Fit to Protect the Bumpers - there would be `Marking of the Bars` - The Damage to My Xtrail Bumper is NOT actual `Impact` Damage regarding `Holes Chips` have been caused by `Strikes` - The Damage is `Cracking` of the Resin Bumper [Cover] caused when People have `Pushed In` the Bumper with the `Weight` of Their Vehicles when They have Reversed [I assume] into it - IF They had `Pushed` onto a 1.5" Tubular Steel `Bar` which is Attached to the Xtrail with Very Strong Brackets - attached to the Chasis - Only THEIR Vehicles would be `Damaged`. Something that I also find `Strange` is that as the Xtrail Bumper is Higher than `Most` Cars - What Area of these People`s Vehicles has done this Damage to My Car ?? - There are a lot of Vans around this area during the Daytime - BUT - It cannot be that Only Vans have done this to My Car [?] - Although obviously there IS `More Chance` of being Reversed Into by a VAN - Re. Lack of Visibility behind them - "Please Excuse that comment" `Professional Van Drivers` - I mean the `Unprofessional Van Drivers`. I have thought of the `Scrap Yard` route BUT - I have a Friend who has been `Looking` for 2 Years for a Bumper for His Xtrail - He has Damage from an `Accident` where another Vehicle ran into His Rear Bumper - He has become - at His Own Description `Fanatical` in trying to Track Down a replacement Bumper - `No Luck` in 2 YEARS - Trying Ebay - Internet in General - Scrap Yards - Car Breakers - Car Breaker websites - Xtrail Forums etc. I have submitted Enquiries on the UK Xtrail Forum - and I have been in `Private Message Contact` with a few People on that Forum - No-One could suggest anywhere that I could even TRY. I have also tried the Internet / Ebay - I have only found 2 `Damaged` Bumpers for Sale - These needed More Repairs than My Existing Bumper - They were `Not Cheap` and one Seller wanted £100.00 P&P on Top of His Price - THAT Might be Appropriate for a NEW `High Gloss Bumper` for P&P [For Good Protection] - but NOT for an Already Damaged one ! - These not only needed `Repairs` but would obviously have to be `Painted` also ! - One of the Prices for a Damaged Rear Bumper was £350.00 - PLUS £100.00 P&P - THEN I would have had to Pay for `Repairs and Painting` [Spraying] - What would that Cost ?? And I have read that these `Colour Coded Bumpers` are NOT `Painted` originally [?] - I read that they are `Coloured` by some other `Plasticised Process` - SO `Spraying` might NOT even create a `Decent High Gloss [Black] Finish` ?? THEN - After all this the Bumper could be Damaged AGAIN Immediately after a Replacement was Fitted ! - When `Cracks` are Repaired I would be Fairly Sure that they would `Open Up` Immediately if any Pressure was applied - E.G. Someone Reversed their Vehicle into it ! Again I take Your Point about the Risk to Pedestrians - Especially Children - But when You mention the Flexibility of the Xtrail Wings etc. - The `Nudge Bars` that I would like to Fit are only at the Level of the Bumper - They do not Cover any of the Front or Rear of the Vehicle - They would just be the `Point of Impact` with another Vehicle - And I admit a Pedestrian - BUT - As I mentioned in My last `Post` - There is a `Large Steel Bumper` just behind what We are calling the Bumper [Decorative Cover for Steel Bumper] - So would the `Nudge Bars` cause any `Worse Injury` than the Steel Bumper - ?? -Impact Injuries` tend to be Broken Bones and Internal Injuries to Organs etc. would this really be any different from Small `Nudge Bars` - At Bumper Level ?? A Person Impacted by the Vehicle would still tend to Hit the Bonnet / Wings [?] - Except for a Small Child - Who would NOT `Go Up Onto` the Bonnet of `Most Vehicles`, The Decorative Bumper Cover on our Xtrails would only `Give Way` until it hit the Steel Bumper underneath - I cannot imagine that the `Clearance` between the Two is much more than 25mm / 1" - ?? "Thanks Again for Your Reply" - I am sure that We will `Meet Again` on this Forum. Regards, Chris. nondisclosed_email@example.com (CHRISMUR)Thu, 07 Jul 2011 00:28:35 +0000 Re: Bullbars & Nudge Bars under threat by the Federal Governmenthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2054278,from=rss#post2054278https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2054278,from=rss#post2054278Your scenario sounds like a very unusual one. I'm sorry to hear that your bumper is being hit so often. If you have gone to the extent of installing CCTV, then perhaps there is a bigger issue with the location in which the damage is taking place? I.e. this would be the case with anyones car? I'm also pretty sure you can get a new bumper for alot less than £800 from a scrap yard. To be fair, if it's not the bumper taking the hit, it will be the finish on the nudge bars. Perhaps structural benefit was the wrong word. What I mean is, if there was a head on impact with another car at speed, the bar is unlikely to help much. My point about pedestrian safety is that the front of modern cars are designed to flex to reduce injury. Try pushing the front wings, they are very flexible. By having a solid metal bar of any kind of the front, you are increasing the risk of shattering a shin, breaking ribs, or if it's a child, hitting them straight on the head with an object that won't give way. In the circumstances you have described I would reconsider where the vehicle is being left if possible. If you need a new bumper, check ebay for breakers. nondisclosed_email@example.com (RoobUK)Wed, 06 Jul 2011 08:13:06 +0000 Re: Bullbars & Nudge Bars under threat by the Federal Governmenthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2054276,from=rss#post2054276https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2054276,from=rss#post2054276"Hello RoobUK", Originally I wanted to Fit `Nudge Bars` to Protect My Xtrail `Bumper` [Decorative Cover] - I Obviously realise that something like `Bullbars` are NOT suitable to Fit on My Vehicle in the U.K. When You state that these `Bars` - In My case `Nudge Bars` only - have `No Structural Benefit` to the Vehicle that they are Fitted to - If I had these `Nudge Bars` on My Xtrail I would NOT now be looking at approx. £800.00 [If I am Lucky] to replace the Bumper [Decorative Cover]. AND - If I do Replace it [It is looking Bad] - The New one could suffer the same Damage ! - Perhaps within Days of the New one being fitted ! I do NOT want to start thinking that I Personally am `Very Unlucky` - But My Xtrail has been `Reversed Into` about 6 Times [That I have been aware of - After the Fact] in 14 Months ! - With the Cracks that have been caused by this getting worse each time ! Presumably although the Bumper is made from `Resin` [`Water Resistant` - ?] when Winter comes the `Freeze` / `Thaw` process - even with `Minute` amounts of Moisture - WILL cause these Cracks to `Open Up` ?? These `Incidents` have caused Me to Install CCTV - JUST directed at the Xtrail - When I can Park outside My Home [On the Road] - which is `Far from` - Always - I have NOT `Caught` anyone Reversing Into My Xtrail since the CCTV was Installed - `Sods Law` ! I do realise the possible Safety Issues regarding Pedestrians - But If I do Fit `Nudge Bars` and I were to Hit a Pedestrian - Depending upon the Circumstances - They would still `End Up` on the Bonnet ?? - Remember that `Just behind` the Bumper - `Decorative Cover` there is as far as I know a `Big Steel Bumper` [?] - with regard to Impacting the Legs of the Pedestrian [?] - But I suppose that any `Bar` would cause more damage to Their Legs - ?? What would YOU do in the circumstances that I have described ?? Regards, CHRISMURnondisclosed_email@example.com (CHRISMUR)Wed, 06 Jul 2011 07:50:19 +0000 Re: Bullbars & Nudge Bars under threat by the Federal Governmenthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2054266,from=rss#post2054266https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2054266,from=rss#post2054266Just to add to this, It was always my understanding that bullbars / nudge bars / bars of any kind where for protection of the vehicle and it's occupants in the event of a collision with something like a large animal (horse, deer, sheep etc). In the UK, Bullbars are legal, but are generally fitted for appearances and have no safety or structural benefit to the vehicles they are fitted to. Generally in the UK we have little to nothing in regards to wild life that is likely to walk into the road and be hit (most often small rabbits and birds). Not to say it never happens though, I know a man who hit a deer head on and ended up with a written off car and various parts of a deer in his back seat. Bullbars themselves also have a safety impact on pedestrians however, as a pedestrian being hit by bars is more likely to suffer fatal injuries than if they hit a bonnet (hood) that is designed to flex with impact to reduce injury. However, for you guys in Australia I understand that bull bars are almost essential in some areas. For that reason I would almost encourage people to get them fitted! I suspect a balance needs to be found here. A bar design that will allow for sufficient protection in the event of a collision with an animal, but also a design that will attempt to reduce the injuries sustained by pedestrians and animals being hit. Good luck! I hope the outcome is a positive one.  nondisclosed_email@example.com (RoobUK)Tue, 05 Jul 2011 23:12:59 +0000 Re: Bullbars & Nudge Bars under threat by the Federal Governmenthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053781,from=rss#post2053781https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2053781,from=rss#post2053781"Hello to All", I hope that this is NOT too long after the `Last Post` on this Subject - For Me to `Add To` it ?? I hope that You do NOT have this `Law` banning `Bullbars` / `Nudge Bars` etc. `Imposed` upon You. I thought that You might want to read about what happened to Me recently regarding Fitting `Nudge Bars` to My Xtrail: I wanted to fit these as I have had Damage done to My Rear `Bumper` by People Reversing into it - this has happened so Often that the `Bumper` [Decorative Cover] is Cracked - Each time this happens again it is Obviously putting Pressure onto the Cracks - If I replace the `Bumper` I would DEFINITELY want to Immediately Fit `Nudge Bars` to Protect it. I decided to `Check` with My Insurance Company - Just in case that they would `Not Approve` this `Modification` - They told Me in no uncertain terms that they would NOT `Allow` ANY kind of `Bars` to be fitted to My Xtrail [Or any other Vehicle]. I wrote back asking WHY - Fully Expecting the `Safety of Pedestrians` to be Quoted - But they told Me `We will not reveal our `Underwriting Policies` - as they are `Commercially Confidential` - So they would NOT Explain why I could NOT have these and be Insured by Them ! I had Sent Pictures of the `Nudge Bars` to them when I Enquired - to show that I did NOT mean `Bull Bars` - They would not allow ANY kind of `Bars` to ANY Area of the Vehicle. When I Telephoned them during the `Enquiry` - out of Frustration I mentioned that perhaps I should have `Forgotten` about Asking them about this [I was NOT serious]- And just had the `Nudge Bars` Fitted - After all I see `Bullbars` and `Nudge Bars` EVERY DAY when Driving about - Even in the London Area - People Fit these Bars for `Appearance` - NOT for [Their] `Safety`. I was TOLD - `Just as well that You DID Ask Us about these `Bars` - as IF You had an Accident You would NOT be Covered for these `Unapproved Modifications` - We would have REFUSED Your Insurance Cover - For `Breaking our Rules` about Asking / Informing Us about ANY Modifications to the Vehicle ! - I cannot see that as being `Legal` [?] - Especially If someone was Injured ! - BUT I would NOT be the One who `Takes it to Court` ! When I mentioned again that I see `Bullbars` etc. Every Day - Too Many to be Insured with some `Fly by Night` Car Insurance Company - These Insurance Companies ALL stated `It seems Doubtful that these examples that You see would be `Correctly Insured` If/ When they were involved in an Accident [`Vehicle Collision`] ` - Words to that Effect ! I was `Aggravated` by this as I wanted to be able to `Protect` the Rear and Front of My Xtrail from being Damaged - At the point of this `Problem` with My Insurance Company I was within 3 Weeks of My Insurance Renewal - So I started `Searching` Online for `Good Quotes` - That is another `Story` - as Insurance Premiums in the U.K. have risen by an `Average` of 35% from Last Year ! ! When I got a `Short List` of Insurers - 6 Companies - I contacted them ALL by Telephone to Ask about Insuring My Xtrail WITH `Nudge Bars` Fitted [I stated that I wanted to fit them] - EVERY Company REFUSED Me Insurance with this type of `Unapproved Modification` ! I was recommended an Insurer who would `Accept` this Modification for a Higher Premium - BUT as I was already going to be Paying 22% More than last Years Premium - AND Because I felt that IF I fitted the `Nudge Bars` - I would be either `Stuck` with THAT Insurer - Purchase Insurance Online /Offices in Gibraltar ! - OR Find that I had to Remove the `Nudge Bars` to get back with a `Well Known` / Reputable Insurer - I have `Had To` Forget about fitting these `Nudge Bars`. My Xtrail is STILL being Reversed into - Only Today I caught someone doing that ! - They may have `Just Touched` my `Bumper` BUT each Time the Weight of the Vehicle is Definitely causing the Cracks to `Flex` - And several times has caused the Cracks to `Elongate` ! - This IS going to get to the stage where the `Bumper` HAS TO be Replaced ! - It is Already `Unsightly` ! and I expect that `Water Penetration` will also `Accelerate` the Process. I `Hate to Think` what the Cost of a NEW `Bumper` [Decorative Cover] would be ?? - And THEN it could be `Damaged` again the `Next Day` ! ! "Sorry" that as usual My `Post` is very long - I would `Guess` that the U.K. Car Insurance Companies are using the `Safety of Pedestrians` and the `Extra Vehicle Damage` that CAN be `Inflicted` by any type of `Bars` as an excuse in Refusing to Insure Me with `Nudge Bars` on My Xtrail [?] - They are DEFINITELY using the `Fraudulent Injury Claims` after Accidents as the REASON for the `Average` 35% Increase in this Years Premiums ! ! - It has been stated in the Media that the U.K. Car Insurance Companies have NOT `Made a Profit` [Car Insurance Only] for `Years` - Because of the `Massive Increase` in `Fraudulent Injury Claims` [Blamed mainly on `Eastern European Gangs`] and the `Large Increase in the Costs of Vehicle Repair` - Obviously You have to `Read Into` that the Fact that They are Obviously `Making Money` on Their OTHER Insurance Policies - Home Insurance - Holiday Insurance etc. - OR They could NOT remain in Business ! I Hope that the Australian Government does NOT [`Behind the Scenes`] Instruct the Insurance Companies to `Refuse to Allow` Insurance with `Bullbars` / `Nudge Bars` Fitted to Vehicles - Although these `Bullbars` must have been `Designed` with `Rural` / `Outback` Australia in mind Originally ! Well done to all who has voiced their concern and took part in the survey. quote: MEDIA RELEASE The Hon Catherine King MP Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport 24 February 2011 CK006/2011     Pedestrian Safety and Bull Bars The Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Transport, Catherine King, restated again that the Government will not be banning bull bars. "Over recent weeks I have received strong feedback through the consultation process associated with the Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) proposing the adoption of an international standard on pedestrian safety," Ms King said. "Following careful consideration of the views and concerns put by individuals and stakeholders, I have decided that the proposal is not suitable for Australian conditions and I have directed the Department to withdraw the Regulation Impact Statement," Ms King said. "While the Government is committed to improving the safety of pedestrians, we also recognise that bull bars play a positive role in the safety of vehicle occupants. "In no circumstances will the Government consider banning bull bars or contemplate any lessening of the protection they provide. We are committed to ensuring that people remain fully protected in animal strikes and other hazardous situations where bull bars play a key role," Ms King said. Ms King has now asked Department to consult with interested parties on the options for improving pedestrian safety.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Sat, 26 Feb 2011 17:53:38 +0000 Re: Bullbars & Nudge Bars under threat by the Federal Governmenthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2050201,from=rss#post2050201https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2050201,from=rss#post2050201 Hi All I have just read an email from Caravan and Motorhome on tour magazine, latest edition. If we take your view and just ignore this type of behavior by the government, today they will succeed in banning the bull bars and tomorrow they would want to limit the use of 4WDs and SUVs to off-road and country roads OR slam us with higher registration and insurance fees....you can clearly see where this is heading. These surveys are an additional ammunition for the authorized 4WD corporations and spokes people to fight on our behalf and prove the case that some standards are just not realistic and can't be aligned with Europe!nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Wed, 26 Jan 2011 06:40:24 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2049436,from=rss#post2049436https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2049436,from=rss#post2049436I too just finished the survey but is the nudge bar covered by this banning. The survey never mentioned anything about nudge bars, bull bars only. The survey can be found HERE Please take a moment to voice your opinion on this and make a stand!nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Tue, 25 Jan 2011 13:34:32 +0000
