So the smaller tyer R16, has the same rolling radious as the R18? I find that difficult to believe? maybe I'm wrong? Cheers, Haz.
The rolling diameter is within the allowed 3% difference:
705 mm (27.8'') 686 mm (27'')
19 mm (2.7%) shorter.
That's the reason it is speed limited to 80kms/hour to encourage you to fix the original tyre as soon as possible.
I prefer to have a full size spare but I wasn't going to pay a fortune to get the dealer to give me one. You will find them on eBay or at the wreckers.

Re: T31 Series 3 and 4 (TL and Ti) Space saver Spare
Hi Guys,
Currently on ebay is a seller with 3 of the 18" alloy wheels here in Brisbane. Find the advert buy typing alloy wheels xtrail. Has the first one listed at $349. Jalal, is it the same seller you got yours from? You might be interested Jamie.

Re:
Yes John, it's the same seller, but I scored my wheel and tyre from him for $227.00. Anyway, I previously mentioned this seller HERE to those interested, but I reckon $350 is a bit too much.

Jalal, where did you get the 3% figure from? Is it in the owners manual?
I have a Suzuki Vitara spare wheel/tyre combo that is 2mm out in terms of rolling diameter (0.3%) from my Yokos. I was considering looking for a 17" rim so I could fit an identical tyre to my other 4 on the spare but if 3% is the allowable I'm hardly going to worry about 0.3%.

Re:
The 3% I was refererring to is in terms of speed difference allowance that the tyre size calculator gives me when I put both the factory 16" and 18" tyre sizes in the calculator.
Also, on the Ti and TL models, Nissan included a 215/65/16 spare with a rolling diameter of 686 mm (27'') and the other 4 tyres are 225/55/18 with a rolling diameter of 705 mm (27.8''), so the difference between the 2 rolling diameters is 19mm (or approx 2.7%)
I am sure that 0.3% (or 2mm) difference in the rolling diameter in yours case is nothing to worry about.

Re:
Dave,
It's a temporary and speed limited spare. It's not meant to be used permanently, hence the RMS regulation is not applicable in this case. I doubt Nissan Australia would fit something against ADR in the car and leave themselves exposed.

Tyre issue
Much to my horror and dismay, I found an 80km/h speed limited spare hiding in my new TS.
Why Nissan, WHY?
Whilst the spare is technically legal, it's just not legal to use the silly thing! (You mustn't have different tyres or rims fitted to an axle. Because the 16 in speed limited spare isn't the same as the standard rims & tyres, you actually shouldn't use it, bescause it immediatley makes your ride unroadworthy!!)
To alleviate this problem I sourced a genuine ST alloy from a wreckers. (The ST & TS have the same 17in rims) The ST it came from had been t-boned in the front left corner with under than 1000km on it, so I got the pick of the 3 good rims which were all perfect.
Once I had the rubbish factory tyre removed, like the rest of the vehicle pre delivery, I had Bridgestone Dueller 697 rubber fitted to it, so now I have 5 identical rims with real tyres capable of off bitumen travel, which is how Nissan should have made it in the first place!!
PS. What's even funnier about the tyre issue is that the factory fitted crap tyre is actually dearer to buy than a Bridgestone Dueller 697!! Go figure...

Re: T31 Series 3 and 4 (TL and Ti) Space saver Spare
Hi All,
Apologies for starting a new post on this topic without realising this thread existed.
Many thanks, Jal for pointing me in the right direction.
We've got a 2013 TL, found the toy spare in the rear, and after reading all your comments, I have to say it's a bit of a disappointment that Nissan has gone the way of small-car suburban vehicles and put such a limited piece of equipment in such a robust, and otherwise very well made, vehicle.
While often classed as a 'soft roader', it strikes me that the X-Trail still has the construction to go to some serious poor-road territory, hundreds of miles from the nearest help, and to have to rely on half-a-spare to get you into, or out of, some rough territory is concerning.
We're heading to the Bungle Bungles in the future, and, as everyone is aware, it's not 20km to the nearest servo to fix the flat out there...
Clearly, we're on the look out for a full 18" real-wheel to take with us as a 2nd spare.
Any advice on where these might be available would be appreciated.
Also, may I ask if someone could summarise other Nissan models that use the same (18") wheel?
At least it might give some options when the local wrecker stares at you blankly when you ask for an X-Trail 18" wheel...!
Cheers,
GlenJ
