Re: WARNING - Not all CV drive shafts are compatable with Xtrail

Keep an eye on the boots Menno to make sure they aren't rubbing too much, especially once it gets close to the 12 mths warranty expiry date.

Re: WARNING - Not all CV drive shafts are compatable with Xtrail

Good call Kev.

From experience when I priced up repairing the boot vs a reco shaft the shaft was a clear cheaper option.

After my last bush adventure i managed to tear both boots at the front. To save money i picked up 2 second hand shafts at $100ea
They are quite easy to replace as DIY goes. Much easier than boots alone.
Just make sure the car has as little damage as possible and mainly to the rear.
I got lucky with mine as it only had hail damage and fine otherwise.

Also make sure you have plenty of CVT fluid (for auto)on hand to the right spec otherwise you go no where.

As I mentioned in the first post, the ABS sensor ring teeth are completely different.
[snipped]

I should have mentioned earlier, while I was managing a Subaru dealership workshop, we had this problem a few times. We eventually came up with a process that we would remove the ABS ring from the owners original drive shaft before sending it out for exchange (for a reconditioned unit), and then swap the ABS ring on the received reco unit to the owners original ABS ring, and send the unused ring back to the reco shop.

Of course you can only do this on a shaft where you can press the rings on/off. But it guarantees no 4WD/ABS issues as the original ABS ring stays with the vehicle.

Re: WARNING - Not all CV drive shafts are compatable with Xtrail

Sometimes this works Wiz, but in my case the actual CV was not upto the job and still gave shuddering around the 40-60kph mark. Replacing them with reconditioned CV's stopped this, hence the warning about the CV's not all being suitable for the Xtrail.

Re: WARNING - Not all CV drive shafts are compatable with Xtrail

A few months ago I took my 2003 T30 auto to my mechanic to have the CV boots replaced. I did not have any problems with the CVs specifically, but he suggested putting re-conditioned shafts in considering the cars age, 220,000 km's etc. Plus it would probably be cheaper just to change them out as units. So, I had them do that.

Soon after, I noted the exact symptom Kev was having. In 2WD no issues. In Auto, the 4WD would automatically engage after a few kms.

Took it back to the mechanic and they noted the ABS rings were slightly different. My original rings fitted and problem fixed.

A week or so later I was noticing a shudder between 35 to 40kph in 2nd gear under a bit of load. This had only appeared since the CVs/drive shafts were replaced.

I once again returned the car to the mechanic and asked them to assess. After much testing, they said it was very likely the new CV/shafts causing the problem. My mechanic said they have similar problems with Subaru re-cond CV/shafts.

The place where they sourced the shafts anfdriveshafts in Revesby (Sydney) were not interested in taking responsibility, so I would not recommend using their services. Just because they fit does not mean they will work as advertised.

Fortunately my mechanic had retained my original Nissan shafts so we decided to just replace the torn boots.

I've not had the chance to test to see if the shudder has been eliminated yet as I cannot drive at present due to recent leg surgery, but will report back when I can.

So, be very wary of non original CV/drive shafts. If your boots are torn and shafts are not a problem, replace only what is required lest you get non Nissan re-cond units and a heap of hassles. It's taken weeks to sort out and probably 4 days at the mechanics. He did not charge anything for all the extra work as it was his suggestion to replace the whole units.

A quick edit to ad that after a good test drive after fitment of Nissan CVs/shafts no shudder or vibration. All fixed.

Re: WARNING - Not all CV drive shafts are compatable with Xtrail

Wheew, I'm lucky! Just had both front drive shafts recon'd so no mismatch problems. Interesting how it all started though. I have had the Xtrail for 4 mths, brought 2nd hand at 122k , M9r motor auto 4x4 and to cap off a Jap import! 1st month went OK then on a trip at about the 200km mark it started to shudder on left front just like a massive wheel unbalance. Had just had wheels rotated previous week and I thought a wheel was loose. Nope, all OK. drove off and it did not do it again. Ok around town. Started another longish drive and about 30km started shuddering again. Drove car to where I brought it and explained problem, they were pretty good and had me take it to their preferred repairer. To cut the story short, about 4 weeks of investigations and fluffing about it was discovered that the RH inner Y joint had collapsed and also the LH wheel bearings were on way out. The fix was to recon the L & RH shafts and replace LH wheel bearings. Done 1000k since with no probs(touch wood!)

Re: WARNING - Not all CV drive shafts are compatable with Xtrail

I recently took my newly purchased 2009 X trail T31 2.5l petrol with CVT ato to a local mechanics for a RWC. They told me that the left hand front CV shaft needed replacement. Although unhappy I went ahead with them completing the work.
Since then which was the end of June I have only travelled around 1250km. Within two weeks a shudder in the front end developer and the engine warning light came on. The vehicle went into limp mode. After a while it seemed to reset itself and has not come on again. The shudder has become worse and I have now noticed that there is a transmission fuel leak. Due to lockdown I cannot take it back to the mechanics as they are closed.
My feeling is that they have fitted an aftermarket drive shaft which is not compatible. It also appears to have damaged the axle seal. I am going to email the mechanics today. I want the aftermarket CV replaced and the CV seal att the transmission replaced. I relied on the mechanics expertise and it has failed. Fortunately on the receipt it says 2 years warranty on drive shaft. If they do not come to the party there will be legal action taken.
The mechanics should have known this if I can find out by research.
