Headlights playing up

G'day guys!!

im not sure if this is the best place for this topic, ive done a bit of looking and no one seems to have a similar problem (as far as i can see)

about a month ago when i first noticed the problem, i was driving from Goulburn back to Nowra at night and noticed both my headlights on high beam with my light force spotlight running, and whilst on low beam my head lights where fading then go back to normal and fading again.

the problem seems to be getting worse, i thought it might be a battery problem, but every connection there is clean and tight, and ive had a few looks over the loom and i cant find a problem.

the fade to me is similar to a brown out at home.

the head lights im using is the IPF Fatboys, and the light force 170's

and one else had a similar problem?

thanks guys and happy mothers day! emoticon

Re: Headlights playing up

Hi Brenton,

Sounds like a wiring loom problem to me. The IPF Fatboys are best operated with an upgraded wiring loom for extra protection and I had them running with the ARB loom with no problems at all.

Re: Headlights playing up

hey jalal,

just wondering if it was a wiring loom problem on my headlights should this be effecting my spot lights?

another question, how big of a job was it to re-do the wiring loom for the headlight? similar to the spot lights?

thanks for your help,

brenton

Re: Headlights playing up

Brenton,
If its a factory driving light wiring loom then yes it does run through the headlight loom. If you exceed the wattage of your lights in total, then your looms will start to melt away.
i suggest a seperate loom for any pair of lghts that you are running.

Brenton,

It's very easy to install the ARB wiring loom upgrade as it uses the factory harness plugs for the headlights. It's been discussed in detail HERE

Well worth the investment and am still using it with my HID headlights.

Re: Headlights playing up

hey tony,

sorry i didn't phrase my last question very well,

what i ment to say was, this problem is effecting my driving lights aswell but they are on a seperate loom to my headlights. it isn't a factory driving light loom.

could be a possibility of corrosion and melting away.

i thought this could be a problem with my alternator, but i did a little test with my multimeter and seems ok.

cheers, Brenton.

Re: Headlights playing up

Brenton,

It depends on how your driving lights are wired-up, if they're playing up chances are they're getting power from the factory headlight loom and relay, which is adding even more load on the very thin factory headlight wires and they are melting.

Depends on the wattage and number of driving lights added to the headlight wiring.
I would expect the fuses to blow first.

Re: Headlights playing up

I think it would be best to take it to an auto electrician Brenton.
This way he could diagnose the problem quickly. It could be as simple as a faulty relay.

Re: Headlights playing up

hey guys,

thanks for your input!, i have it booked in for the auto electrician tomorrow,

my feeling is that its both the wiring in the loom and the relay.

my next adventure with my lighting problem was tonight where i turned on my high beams with my spot lights, a car came around the corner so of course i dimmed my lights, but my spots stayed on nice and bright emoticon

tomorrow should be interesting, the auto electrician hasn't in his 40 years of his trade ever heard of this. emoticon
