Illuminating the headlight bubble?

Evening guys. Have been looking at the "bubble" on the headlight and wondered if anyone here had tried fitting an LED in here? Haven't taken the thing apart so not sure what space is in there. Seems a shame no to make use of it? If no room for a fitting then what about running a fibre optic and fitting the LED elsewhere? Would like it to come on with sidelights as wouldn't be seen when my Xenons are on anyway.

Re: Illuminating the headlight bubble?

Vandy,

That bubble in the T30 headlight is there for a reason, it is there to tell you that your headlights are working when you look at it from the driver's position at night.

In saying that I don't think you can drill the back of it to insert an LED, I think I tried doing that years ago and as I can remember, the back of it was part of the headlight lens.

Re: Illuminating the headlight bubble?

Ah well - it was worth asking - pretty sure you would have done it if it had been possible - you seem to be the LED King. Strange that the bubble is to show when your headlights are on - a dash light would have done for me! Don't fancy trying to drill into the back as knowing my luck it's going to look pretty damn silly with a broken drill bit sticking out the front emoticon
That's the good thing about this great forum - just about everything has already been tried and it's just a matter of reading, which is what I'm going to do now.

Thats why there is a chime inside when your headlights are on and you open the car door.

I think fitting that light is possible, the only thing you can do is go through the side of the light and not through the back as Jalal mentions.
Whats the worst that could happen, buy another headlight. emoticon

Good idea - either that or just drill a 10mm hole straight through the front and silicone in a W501 globe!! Think I'll just leave the bubble as is?

Hi Tony
Took your advice and tried to get into the headlamp from the side - think you may have meant the inside though - you got any body filler?!

Re: Illuminating the headlight bubble?

Just had a look at my T31 and it looks like you can get to the bubble from the back of the headlight.
You have to go in through the gap between the top of the indicator and the bubble. There is a kind of slightly curved surface under the bubble which you can go through. This will not affect the reflective lens of the light.

The only tricky bit is, to get the back of the headlight off.

Re: Illuminating the headlight bubble?

OK. So it all started well and I thought I'd just pop out the headlight to get a better look at the globe illuminating idea. You were right - you can get at it from the side! emoticon

I dont think a sledge hammer is the correct tool for removing a headlight.
