Re: Indicator fuse keeps blowing

Hi Julie,

Has it been raining or very cold with lots of dew in the morning ?
You do have a trailer wiring plug don't you ?

I am thinking that it might be some water getting into one of the indicators or a short in the trailer plug wiring caused by either water getting into the plug or a frayed harness at the back of the plug.

Re: Indicator fuse keeps blowing

Hi Alan I'd just gotten around to thinking it might be simpler to do a quick rewire than stuff around for hours trying to find what it is.

Hi Kev, I have a feeling that the problem might just be in the trailer wiring.

No rain where I live now, not likely until Christmas time, and not much dew. It's usually about 16degrees overnight, although a few days back it got down to 13 for two nights in a row, so that's not really cold. Could it be dust, there's plenty of that everywhere, all the time.

When I put the fuse in, turn the car on the blinkers work, but as soon as the car is running and I turn the blinder it shorts out.

Anyway, went down to Cairns today and saw the same auto electrician. He looked at it for about half an hour and came back apologetic and said I'd need to bring it back on Wednesday for him to pull the dash off, and could I empty the car out so he can get into other places at the back.

I'm leaving here to head south so all packed up for the trip, thankfully it's not as much as usually finds it way into the car. I hope he can sort it out tho, I know these things can go on and on.

Re: Indicator fuse keeps blowing

Grab a can of CRC or contact cleaner from any auto place, and spray liberally inside the trailer plug receiver, as well as the trailer plug if still used...
would also check all globes for correct wattage, and ensure fuse is correct rating

any auto elec "worth his salt" should be able to isolate this fault....possibly start by checking all trailer loom connections at the rear of the car, where it patches into car loom
probably used scotch locks....and those things are a fault waiting to happen.

I agree with Dave and also can't see any reason for the auto electrician to go pulling the dash apart to identify the cause.

You can also check the hazards flasher relay as it could be short-circuiting when the indicators are being used. The hazards flasher relay is located in the fuse box under the steering column if I remember correctly.

Re: Indicator fuse keeps blowing

The secret to the problem is your answer

When I put the fuse in, turn the car on the blinkers work, but as soon as the car is running and I turn the blinder it shorts out.

Now if memory serves me correctly there is a module in the rear part of the loom that is the repeater module for the trailer connection. I'm sure Kev will correct me if I'm wrong. When the ignition is off this module is not active but when the engine is running it is. I'm sure it will be easy to isolate the wiring in and out of this module if your vehicle is fitted with one. Also do you have an electric brake controller?

Re: Indicator fuse keeps blowing

Thanks guys, I've made some notes, and will be off at 6am tomorrow morning to Cairns. (Been staying in the Misty Mountains at Millaa Millaa with fog & rain a constant, disregarding the fact it's already the Dry Season up here).

Keep your fingers crossed he'll figure it out fast, I want to be on the road again asap and on my way south.

Will let you know how it goes.

Re: Indicator fuse keeps blowing

emoticon emoticon emoticon yeaaay, all fixed.

They had to get behind the fuse box to look at the wiring. Where the fuse had blown so often the wire had started to deteriorate, fixed that, then I think they rewired the trailer connection. The electrician explained it to me, and it's all itemised in the invoice, which is out in the car and it's raining. Cost $361.00, but at least it's roadworthy again. Will check my invoice later and if anything different or more accurate details will post here later.

Edit: They also suggested replacing the trailer indicator bulbs with LEDs.
