posticon T30 2nd gear problem...

I only got my 2006 Exy when I joined the forum a few weeks back and so far she has been a great runner, however...

I am worried I may have a problem with the gearbox as 2nd gear seems to be very tempremental, especially when changing down. Moving up the gears she can be a bit 'clunky' but coming back down she will only drop into gear ok about 30-40% of the time emoticon

I thought I was changing down to early, with the RPM too high, but even at slow speed she can be the same. Its not all the time though or at exactly the same speed range.

The other gears seem fine.

Now I dont know if its something Im not doing right for an Exy (or 4x4) or whether there is something wrong with her. I usually only drive in 2wd as its all bitumin driving so I havent tried it in 4wd to see if she does the same.

Obviously if there is something wrong I will have to go back to the yard I bought it from (who incidently told me they had replaced the clutch) however I dont want to go back and just say 2nd gear doesnt feel right without some kind of idea what the problem may be... Im not a mechanical kind of chap unfortunately...

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated... emoticon

Cheers

Do you know how to double-clutch when changing down gears ?
It might be an idea to try this to match the revs and if it changes fine then it will be something wrong with the 2nd gear synchro.

Re: T30 2nd gear problem...

Double clutching will help, but the problem is with only one gear.

I believe you have a worn syncro between 2nd and 3rd gear, possibly the others are wearing as well.

Take it back to the dealer asap and use your 3 month warranty.
The syncro and possibly even the gear will have to be replaced. Big dollars.

With a bit of luck the selector might even be worn for that gear, buy still the box has to come out.

Go over the Xy with a fine tooth comb and write down all the things that aren't quite right, faded headlight (globe), internal lights not working. Things like that.

Good luck

Tony

Re: T30 2nd gear problem...

Hi XPilot. I know it has been a long time since your post re 2nd gear issues. Did you get it sorted out under the dealer warranty? Hope so.

My 2006 Xtrail, manual transmission, 105,000 km, has also got slight synchro issues in 2nd gear (I suspect).

If you didn't get it sorted, did the problem get any worse?

Your input would be appreciated. Ta., Black Ollie

Re: T30 2nd gear problem...

Once a synchro starts to go it only gets worse, to the eventual extent that the transmission keeps popping out of that gear under hard acceleration or deceleration. The amount of time it takes only depends on the amount of time you drive and how hard you drive in that gear.

Re: T30 2nd gear problem...

Just a little tweak on what Revhead Kev said - Hope no offence taken.

"Once a synchro starts to go it only gets worse"
-correct

"...to the eventual extent that the transmission keeps popping out of that gear under hard acceleration or deceleration. "
-incorrect. The syncro system does not hold the selected gear engaged. It simply synchronizes the speed of the gear train while selecting a gear. The gearbox control linkage system holds the selected gear engaged.

"The amount of time it takes only depends on the amount of time you drive and how hard you drive in that gear."
-incorrect. The speed at which the syncros wear is dependent on the speed differential between the gears while changing, and the time taken to synchronize the gears (ie hard fast shifting).

Just my 2c!
Jeff
