SE Queensland - Driving and Picnic

I'm planning a trip that will be a nice quiet drive with a little off roading through some of the best pristine forestry in the world. This trip has been done in the past but I am modifying it a little, just for variety

The date is set for Monday, 26th April 2010 (public holiday).
The meetup place will be The Memorial on Brisbane Rd, Beaudesert

Timeline for the day, approximately

Meet 8.30
Depart 9am
Canungra Vineyard 12-12.30
Depart vineyard 2-2.30
Skywalk 3-3.30

We will start out with the first part of "Dirty Weekends" tour # 18 - O'Reilly's . At the top of Duck Creek Rd, instead of going up to O'Rielly's cafe and tree top walk we will meander down the bitumen (windy) road and stop in for a picnic at the O'Rielly's vineyard.

Once we finish there, we will travel through Canungra up to Mt Tamborine via the goats track (another windy road), cross over the mountain and travel down the other side. We will stop off at the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk (for anyone wanting do a tree top walk). After this we will continue down the mountain and our trip will finish at the Bearded Dragon hotel where we can have a relaxing drink and finish up the day.

Some notes of interest and prices:

A gold coin donation to help the conservation of Duck Creek Rd is asked for as you hit the dirt and is a very worthwhile cause.

Vineyard prices

Vineyard Picnic Basket
$54.00 per couple / $27.00 per person
A wholesome country-style selection consisting of cold cut meats, smoked salmon, marinated vegetables, boiled egg, fresh garden salad, Australian cheeses, chutney and fresh crusty bread. Finish your meal with an ice cream from our freezer selection.

Children: Ham & salad roll plus an ice cream
$8.50 each

Aussie BBQ Picnic Basket
$56.00 per couple / $28.00 per person True blue 'cook your own' BBQ, including prime steak, marinated chicken pieces and sausages, sliced onion, fresh garden salad, condiments and fresh crusty bread. Finish your meal with an ice cream from our freezer selection.

Children: Sausage and baguette roll plus and ice cream
$8.50 each

For those who are not into picnics, they do have a restaurant which will be open for lunch – bookings essential for restaurant and picnic baskets, pay on the day.

Please note that there is strictly no BYO food and beverage. A $10.00 per basket charge applies for any basket cancelled or not claimed on the day of the booking that I, as the organiser, will be required to pay. Final numbers required 2 days before the trip.

Anybody wishing to partake in the wine tasting - $3 p/p

check out the vineyard here

Skywalk prices

Adults (17 Years & over) $18.50
Children (6-16 Years) $9.50
Family (2 Adults + 2 Children) $47.00
Extra Children in Family $5.00 per child
Seniors Card Holders/Students $15.50

Children (16 Years & under) must be accompanied by an adult.

Gift Vouchers Available

Please advise prior to arrival if your guests have any special requirements.

Walk takes approximately 45 minutes, suitable walking shoes recommended.

check out the Skywalk here

Now the main track up to O’Rielly’s is easy to moderate, perfect for the first timer or beginner off roader but I have found two offshoot tracks if anyone wants to test out or hone their skills on the day.

At the Skywalk, anyone not wanting to do the walk can drive to the Bearded Dragon and the rest can meet up there afterwards or call it a day when they finish. I will not do the walk and will lead the drivers to the Bearded Dragon but will give clear instructions for those wishing to meet up afterwards.

Re: SE Queensland - Driving and Picnic

G'day Jamie

Your planned trip sounds just perfect (as usual emoticon ).

Can you please add Rosaleen & I to the list (plus one pic-a-nic basket for two).

I've also asked some friends to join us, but won't know until later if they'll be tagging along (I'll let you know in due course).

Re: SE Queensland - Driving and Picnic

Hi Jamie,

I've always thought about checking out O'Reilly's and what you have planned sounds great. Please add Lyn, Jacinta (4yrs) and myself to the list and a vineyard basket for 2.

We will travel up on the Sunday, do some shopping and stay with relatives in Ipswich for the night.

Looking forward to it.

Cheers,
Mark.
