I know old thread, but noob member here! I buff mine with buffing compound and a buffer, on low speed. It does clear it, but without the UV protective clear on it, it yellows off pretty fast. I'm planning on getting new headlights from an aftermarket panel house (OEM, not originals) for about $265 off ebay soon. The other problem of course is the fine crazing of the plastic, and even some discoloration inside the lens which make my lights look like total kee-rap. It simply annoys the heck out of me. I'm not a perfectionist, but when I see imperfections like this, my OCD kicks in and wont let me forget about it! A side note. My solar unit on my house has a plastic viewing window where you see how much power you generated. Buffing compound + elbow grease = almost clear window again. Then I covered it with a flap of stiff dark plastic to keep those nasty UV rays away. A year on and its still clear. *Must research removal of UV rays from sunlight.* Cheersnondisclosed_email@example.com (tellgio)Tue, 21 Jun 2016 13:29:58 +0000 Re: Head Light Repairs - Buff & Polishhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2086934,from=rss#post2086934https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2086934,from=rss#post2086934Can you share before and after photos?nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Wed, 18 Feb 2015 20:01:27 +0000 Re: Head Light Repairs - Buff & Polishhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2086932,from=rss#post2086932https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2086932,from=rss#post2086932I restore mine every so often. I looked into the whole toothpaste/wet+dry paper technique and went out to get what I needed. In Super cheap I came across a tin of Armorall cut+polish cream, which I bought to finish off with after I had done my wet+dry. I got home and thought I would just give it a go with the Armorall, as it says it removes oxidation.... and you know what... it bloody does! I went over the headlights with it and decided it wasn't worth the hastle of wet+dry because it had done such a good job by itself. It isn't perfect but for the minimal effort required it is a decent result. Make sure you clean it properly after though, my brother used a high cut compound, wet sanded and polished his headlights on his Astra which the same thing happens too then covered the headlights with a protective clear tint, then also put headlight protectors over the lights so rocks didn't damage the film. nondisclosed_email@example.com (tBex)Mon, 24 Jun 2013 08:41:14 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2075225,from=rss#post2075225https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2075225,from=rss#post2075225You can now find a brand new set of T30 heradlights for as cheap as $250.00 for BOTH on eBay and used ones in good condition like the ones I sold of my T30 were sold for around $75 bucks a side, so it's really not worth the hassle of spending time and energy polishing them, as it's a temporary solution anyway. To be honest, I am astonished that cars with such yellow headlights can still pass rego, as the impact on illumination and light spead would be quite significant I would think.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Sat, 22 Jun 2013 16:07:08 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2075224,from=rss#post2075224https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2075224,from=rss#post2075224I parked next to an exy yesterday. It had headlight protectors on, but the headlights underneath were still yellow. I got a replacement headlight last year after a sad little wallaby jumped into the left side of my car. The repairers polished the right headlight and it looked great, for a couple months. I bit the bullet at my last service, and paid $315 plus labour to replace the right hand one. Now the car looks balanced again. I'd hesitated to replace it/them, as I thought replacements were about 3 or 4 times as much. Should have done it sooner. Guess this pair will yellow as well (optimist that I am...). nondisclosed_email@example.com (trailx)Sat, 22 Jun 2013 16:01:01 +0000 Re: Head Light Repairs - Buff & Polishhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2068121,from=rss#post2068121https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2068121,from=rss#post2068121Just used Maguiars PlastX on my faded headlights to restore them to clear. I have had considerable experience with plastics in my engineering career, and have had a lot of success with the Novus brand of plastic polish. It is available in three grades, 1,2 and 3. - - Grade 1 is so fine that is really just a cleaner, Grade 2 works very well on dull tail lights, and Grade 3 is the one that you start with when dealing with deep scratches. It is not cheap, but a 240ml bottle at about $20 will last a long time. Most engineering supply houses such as Blackwoods carry this product. Hope that this may help.nondisclosed_email@example.com (avanti7320)Mon, 25 Oct 2010 21:59:44 +0000 Re: Head Light Repairs - Buff & Polishhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2046049,from=rss#post2046049https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2046049,from=rss#post2046049To prevent the yellowing (for those who don't have the problem yet) it is caused by overcleaning etc and thereby removing the UV protective layer on the surface of the plastic. Wash the plastic lens with the utmost gentleness and use headlight protectors and they should stay clear for a long, long time. As TB said above, there is a restorer available to clear up yellow lenses.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Translucidus)Thu, 16 Sep 2010 11:42:38 +0000 Re: Head Light Repairs - Buff & Polishhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2045961,from=rss#post2045961https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2045961,from=rss#post2045961Chris here, in Sunny SA (that's South Africa, not South Australia!) I too had the yellowing discolouration of my plastic T30 headlights... Was browsing a 'sale items' table in our hardware store (similar to Bunnings) and I came accross 'clear plastic polish', liquid, about AUD 10.00, and it worked GREAT! I think it is 'Plexus' brand, really nice to buy something that works well, first time round! You need to remember that the T30 headlights are plastic (not glass) so buffing them is not a good idea. You can use light polish on them, but that's about it.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Tue, 16 Mar 2010 14:57:05 +0000 Re: Head Light Repairs - Buff & Polishhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2040745,from=rss#post2040745https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2040745,from=rss#post2040745trailx wrote: Will have to check the cost and wondering if it might be worth getting done.
