What's in a nut??

Hi all,

I have some chrome wheel nuts on at the moment. Although, based on how they look, I'm guessing the chrome isn't very good. They have been affected by brake dust and dirt / wear and tear. So they look quite ordinary against the wheel.

Anyway, I have another set of compatible wheel nuts (12x1.25) I bought for a subaru - but here's the difference. The inner thread is OK, but the nuts on the wheels are 21mm outer, while the other set I have are 19mm outer.

Does the 2mm difference in outer size make a difference in strength? I assume the extra 2mm means more metal in the nut.

The other reason I'm keen to swap them is the 21mm outer means I have to use a thin wall socket to remove - rather than a thicker impact socket - the thicker socket can't fit in the recess of the rim.

Cheers,
Shane

Re: What's in a nut??

Hey there

Stress on the threads is calculated based on thread pitch, nominal diameter of thread, number of engaged threads and the force on the thread.

If none of those have changed then its really just dependent on wether the material of the nut is the same.

So if we are talking about the strength of the nut to hold the wheel on i don't think there is much of a difference, the nut is only as strong as its weakest part which is the thread. I'm thinking the outer diameter just affects the force applied with the socket.

That's my 2c anyways.

Hi Shane,
It will make no difference on the outer diameter, only the one you mentioned about the socket.
If you are concerned about not using a thin walled socket, try a wheel brace. Either that or buy some new wheel nuts which shouldn't be that much to buy.

Re: What's in a nut??

Thanks guys.

Yeah - i did buy another wheel brace (with a thin wall, tried about 4 before I found 1 that would fit) and a socket to fit the 21mm nuts.

The 19mm nuts I have are new, I only had them on my subi for about a week before I swapped them for a different set. I'll put them on the Xtrail then both cars will be 19mm and I can use a proper brace and/or impact socket to tighten.

Thanks,
Shane
