Re: Home made cross bars
Mine came with the Exy installed as part of a huge package deal upon purchase way back in 2003. Never removed them for anything never ever, oh wait I lie I lifted the passenger front side up an inch to slot in my UHF antenna mount thingy but prompty placed them back on the roof rail nice and tight again.
I'd say a big design inclusion that is simply a must have is some sort of embossed X-Trail logo either punched into the front side rails so you can see them from the front or cool little engraved X-Trail logos on the sides where they connect to the roof rails, maybe painted. Oh and they gotta be aerodynamic cos that's a necessity at warp speed for less resistance and better fuel economy when not carrying the kayak or whatever.

Re: Home made cross bars
The easiest way to mount your home made bars would be to purchase the appropriate mount for your model from a roof bar dealer and then mount your cross rails to that. Mind you you wouldn't be saving that much. If you factor in the cost of your time and materials then the roughly $200 you'd spend on a set of properly engineered roof bars doesn't seem that much after all.

Buying the mounts off a dealer they would probably be asking $500 for them.
Given that the local dealer just said around $200 for 2 bars complete I don't think so in fact RRP is $184 for the legs (not that members here pay retail).
My final word on the matter, I didn't come here to be insulted by idiots who don't want help.

Re: Home made cross bars
Alan,
There is no need to insult anyone as not everyone is aware that you are offering members of this forum special prices and deal on roof racks, certainly not "regular member" who haven't yet upgraded their membership to access the "discounts" section of the forum.
We have given Fil plenty of advice and opinions in this thread in response to his question, so it is now upto him to weigh-up the pros and cons of self manufacturing these roof racks.
