Rear tailgate gas struts failure

Have had a problem over the last week with my tail gate not wanting to stay open and is closing down as soon as you open it.

The gas struts have lost there oomph emoticon

have booked the car in for her 60,000 service(boy that went fast emoticon ) and have told them about this issue.

Are gas struts suppose to last longer than 2 years?

Would like to hear other comments and thoughts!

Regards Scot

Re: Rear tailgate gas struts failure

If you go by the T30, they have lasted for 9 years since it was launched in 2001 and I have never come across a T30 with failed rear gas struts. Although the T31 tailgate is MUCH heavier and this is where the problem might be, as Nissan may have forgotten to upgrade the tailgate struts and probably used the same ones as the T30 (in terms of gas pressure) which would be pretty stupid.

Scot

I think they wore out a little prematurely, these things should retain their gas for close to 10 years.

Have you checked your struts for any damage, ie little nicks or dings in the shaft.
this could lead to the 'o' ring deteriorating and releasing the gas.

Anway, they are not that expensive to re fill.
Nissan should cover this under warranty if the shafts are undamaged, just a pain in the butt to take it there for several hours.

If you can't get them fixed under warranty a mob call Strut Regas should be able to help and I'm sure they have an office near you...

I am hoping that get this sorted out at my next service!

Yes it is a shame that they have gone so quickly but that is life and you can not stop things from breaking down.

No damage to the shafts as far as I could see!

posticon Re: Rear tailgate gas struts failure

Hi Scot
I had only had my T31 for a short (3 months) while when I went on a forum trip to do the Hunter Range track.
During the lunch interval I parked next to another T31, both with tailgates up.
I noticed a height difference in the tailgate opening with mine being approx 5cm lower than the other T31. Whenever I opened my tailgate I was always bumping my head on it initially( ok i am a slow learner) and then it would creep up in time so I would fit under it.
At the next service I pointed this out at the dealership. they compared mine to a new Exy and no arguments - tailgate gas struts replaced. Approx 15 months later and they are still good.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Kenny

Ok here is a update on what is going on!

The rear door struts are going to be replaced under warranty as they have failed with a internal fault!(Either gas or fluid leak)

Regards Scot

Re: Rear tailgate gas struts failure

The rear door struts are in and replaced and I did ask if the small paint damage to the spoiler could be repaired as well and they have taken photo's and sent a quote off to Nissan for a decision!

The rear left hand outside door handle seal has been replaced as well but they have found the inner seal of the handle had failed as well so that is on order and my brake pads are only good for another 3,000 or so kms so I am getting them done as well!
