80000km DIY service - diff oil change

I have decided to undertake the 80000km service myself, and will add to this DIY some of the bits and pieces you'll need to undertake it yourself, as I go through it... (Jalal, feel free to move this to another section on the forum if needed).

I will attach photos later.

Diff Oil change

This is a relatively easy task to perform.

Tools required:

1L bottle of 80W90 Gear oil (what's left will be needed for transfer case, also part of the 80000km service).
10mm allen key
approx 1m of 13mm OD clear hose and funnel to fit over end (Bunnings), or alternatively a hand-pump (to get oil up into diff)
Drip/oil-change tray or other container capacity minimum 600ml.
Rag(s)

It is best to do this when the engine has cooled, as you will be feeding the hose over the muffler to assist in filling the diff. Park on a level surface.

Diff is located between the rear wheels.

Place drip tray under diff and unscrew top (fill) plug at rear of diff using 10mm allen key. You may need a shifter or ring spanner over the end of it to get extra leverage to undo it. You can check the level using small finger but it is not necessary. Undo bottom (drain) plug, taking care NOT to drop it, as it has a magnet fitted to the inside of the plug.

You will notice considerable gunk (fine metal shavings) accumulated on the inside of the bottom plug (due to the magnet). Wipe it clean with a rag and place it somewhere that it wont pick up dust or dirt (or more metal shavings).

Once the oil is drained out, check for any residue particles inside the diff using small finger in drain hole. Clear oil and dirt from around drain hole and carefully replace drain plug.

Feed clear 13mm hose over muffler, through the hole in the chassis (directly behind the diff filler hole) and into the filler hole, until it stops (approx 50mm inside). I stuffed a rag to hold the hose in place on top of the muffler, and the towbar attachment to hold the other end of the hose. This prevents it from falling out with the weight of the oil in the hose. Slowly pour in approx 550mL of gear oil, occasionally checking to make sure the hose hasn't come out of the diff. I ended up gently blowing the remainder of the oil through the hose into the diff, until the oil started to seep out the fill-hole. Remove the hose and replace the fill plug, double-check both plugs are tight.

I will do the transfer case oil change when I do the radiator/coolant change as I need to remove my bash-plate, and will do both at the same time.

To be continued...

Tip: leave the bottle of gear oil in the sun for a while before the job, makes it easier to pour or pump into the diff.

Re: 80000km DIY service - diff oil change

I noticed you used 80W90 Gear oil for the rear differential.

When Nissan did my 40k service they used EPX 80W/90 for the transfer case (which is simply a hypoid right angle gear). The EP in EPX stands for extreme pressure and can withstand sheer loads.

BUT for the rear differential they used Castrol LSX 90 Diff oil. I believe this is for a limited slip diff (which the XTrail doesn't have) and maybe they used this because of the Wet Clutch in the Rear Diff housing.

Might be worth checking out as there is much more sheer happening in the rear diff./wet clutch and normal EPX 80W/90 gear oil may not survive the 40K between changes as a limited slip oil would.
