amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

hey guys, this might be a one for rich.

i have spent the last two weeks installing myself a new sound system. just the headunit, front 6" clarion splits and rear 6" 2ways and amp, (subs coming later)

it was all going smoothly untill the car turns on, i get a really high pitched alternator whine and constant humm coming through the speakers, very very very annoying!!

i have tryed everything i can think of, (and yes the rca's run down the passanger side and the power cable is running down the drivers side)
i have sawped cables, tryed new rca, tryed 4 different earths, noise filters, and also different amps.

help!!

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

Hey Brenton,

I hate alternator whine with a vengeance, and those noise filters are really only a band-aid fix - better to solve the problem than try to conceal it...

I had alternator whine in one of my previous cars (no, not the Pulsar, Jalal emoticon ), and it turned out I'd run the RCA leads near the factory wiring loom where it passed over the rear wheel arch. The interesting thing was that the only thing I'd changed was from an Alpine "Flex" series amplifier to a "V12" series amplifer - using all existing cabling, so you could understand my thinking that the new amplifer was at fault! Alpine's response was that the V12 amplifier was higher quality and more sensitive to noise (?!). The way I found out the problem was to run another set of RCA leads through the cabin (in the air, across the headrests) which alleviated the problem - it was just a matter of fully removing the trim panels to reveal the factory wiring loom I hadn't seen before.

If that doesn't solve your problem, I'd be looking at trying to hook up another amplifier and see if that solves it. By the way, is the amplifier mounted next to part of the wiring loom?

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

thanks for your reply mate,

yeah i have tryed different rca's running though the air as you said, but no change.
i have the amp under the drivers seat.

my mate told me to hook my ipod through a 3.5mm to rca converter, when i hook that up, it runs perfect even with the car running, but im not sure yet what that means. if the headunit is faulty or the wiring.

im and running 4 gauge wiring about a foot and a bit long to the earth, well sanded and screwed down, (there is an unused screw hole about 2 inches left of the vin number on the drivers side.

and my power cable is 8 gauge.

my amp is a pioneer 600w

thanks rich

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

ive tryed again this morning, i am starting to think its the headunit. but still unsure,

this has to be the most annoying and frustrating noise that anything could make,

i recently drove down to melbourne and back with that whine/hummm, 1700km all up. lucky the whole stereo didnt end up flying out of the window.

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

Brenton, when you connect the iPod using the converter, does it connect straight to the amplifier, or does it still go through the head unit?

Have you tried different sources on the head unit (ie: does it do it on both radio and cd)?

I'd think the head unit is at fault if the iPod connects directly to the amplifier, and the noise is present on both radio and CD.

Another thing to try is the grounding of the head unit. Some head units use the chassis-mounting screws as a ground (as well as the black wire?!) and it could also be a ground loop from the antenna. Maybe disconnect the antenna from the back of the head unit and see if the noise goes away.

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

hey rich

when i connect my ipod, its directly into the amp.

i have tryed dissconnecting the antenna, but the noise is still there,

i just quickly disconnected my girlfriends headunit and tested it on my system, and that one works perfect!, no annoying noise just music.

so i dont know what to do now, i dont think returning my headunit is an option, even tho its only 2 months old, because i dont think its covered under warranty because i installed it myself, even tho i did nothing wrong.

thanks

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

Brenton,

When you connected the noise filter did you make sure it was a heavy duty noise filter on the output of your alternator? The filter will need to pass or handle the current rating of the alternator.

The noise is definitely alternator interference.

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

hey jalal,

i havnt tryed a alternator noise filter on the alternator, i have tryed 1 on each rca cables (connecting the rca cable to the amp) that stops the noise, but it sounds like having all my speakers as tweeters, no bass comes through at all, Untill you add the ground of the noise filter, then the whine comes back with the bass.

the third noise filter i have tryed connects to the back of the head unit - to the black, red and yellow wires, and that does nothing aswell.

i havnt seen a noise filter that connects to the alternator.... yet

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

Generally a hum will be caused by an earth loop where your radio is grounded at one point, the amp at another and so on

Re: amp install - alternator whine/constant humm

Brenton,

THIS thread addresses your problem exactly and shows ways to overcome this issue (including the suggestion made by Alan above to have both radio and amp share the same earth point)
