Timing Chain service/Replacement.

Just wondering how often the timing chain on the T30 Xtrail should be serviced/tensioned.

The tensioner for the timing chain needs to be checked at the 100K service.

Re: Timing Chain service/Replacement.

Hi Guys,

My x-trail has done 110k now and there is a rattling noise ( not too loud ) but definately noticable coming from my engine. Its mostly heard when i accelerate hard in lower revs.

I nearly bought an x-trail from QLD before i bought mine and the guy said the timing chain tensioner needs to be checked/replaced or tightened at 100k.

Does this sound correct? Does this sounds like mine is loose or needs replacing and hasnt been done when the 100k service was done?

Yes, the timing chain tensioner needs to be checked at the 100K service.

I guess I was just asking whether you think that noise I explained in my engine bay sounds like the timing chain tensioner needs checking or maybe it was something else. Sorry for covering the same topic again.

No need to apologise. It is very likely the noise coming from the tensioner, so it pays off to have it checked at the next service.

Re: Timing Chain service/Replacement.

I have the same noise coming from the engine and when I asked about replacement of the tensioner and chain I was told "get a new car" because it would be 2 weeks and $5k emoticon

Don't know how much they wanted to charge for the chain and tensioner but when I mentioned I could get a kit of 2 chains + 2 tensioners + 3 giudes + sealing gasket for $210 shipped from the US they were surprised emoticon

Now I just have to find out if it really is the chain and tensioner which needs replacing and then find a mechanic who has reasonable charges.

Hey Kev, does it sound like you're driving an old deisel or the tappets are out but not a pinging sound you get when using a lower grade fuel?

Especially noticeable first thing in the morning and when accellerating hard or driving in a tunnel?

Mine does the exact same thing and thought it was the tensioner/chain but mechanic advised it wasnt.
