Re: T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

local dealer gets them in all the time for this problem , xtrail , maxima , tiida , etc , because this part of the axel assembly is not a sealed unit it is prone to a surface rust build up on the splines together with a slightly loose drive shaft nut both can cause the clicking noise , depending on how many kms the car has done they sort it out as good will fix ...

Re:

Hey guys,

I think my Xtrail is making the same sound, under acceleration and de-acceleration and also entering my driveway, I recently had both inner CV's blow out on me half way down to the Snowy Mountains, it was patched but no doubt didn't help the situation.
From reading all the posts - all that is required is for the drive shafts to be pulled out and regreased?

Recent work on my Xtrail includes King-Spring lift, new DBA rotors and Bendix 4WD pads (and two universal CV inner boots).

Cheers,
Tom.

Re:

Tom,

My 2008 T31 was making the same noise but all was required for me was to tighten the axle nuts (which tightened about an eight of a turn each) - that was done about 20,000k ago (at 120,000) and haven't had any issues since. Although I suspect it'll come back sooner without having re-greased the splines while doing so.

Cheers
Tim

Re:

Thanks Tim, is there a specific torque set for the axle nuts? I don't want to damage the bearing.
EDIT - Researching online I found 294NM mentioned on another site.

Also, we have just hit 165,000km so it's most likely due for some attention emoticon
I'll tighten them up when I get home from work and see if it makes a difference.

Re:

So I pulled the wheels off and I couldn't do up the Axle nut more then it is now, it didn't move at all. but whilst the wheel is in the air, I moved it back and forwards, - there is a clunk from the disc rotor against the wheel studs, and noise from the driveshafts and outer CV joints, I think my wheels are forming some kind of alternative band! I need to find a decent mechanic in Brissie who can grease these babies up!

Edit- My Xtrail is booked in with Moorooka Nissan next week, as soon as I mentioned it the service guy said they just need to be repacked greased and tightened. Well we see next week if that's the case.
Also.... make that 166,000km after yesterday's day trip emoticon

Update - it was the repack & grease! all clicking gone - car feels great. $280
(apparently it had the wrong nut on one side - though they both looked identical when I had the wheels off.)

Re: T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

I had the clicking noise with my X-Trail, happened when I changed gears - more specifically when I was releasing the clutch pedal. Had it checked at the 110,000km service and turns out it was a loose nut in the driveshaft (not sure exactly where) but apparently nothing to do with axle splines or grease. A retightening of that nut has fixed the noise and improved the feel of changing gears noticeably. Thanks to the contributors in this thread as I showed it to the mechanic and it made things much easier to diagnose.

Re: T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

I started hearing this same noise at around the 95,000 klm mark, when I was entering or leaving my driveway mainly on full lock. The noise was not worn Cv's, but more of a lighter clicking sound. With the front wheels off the vehicle, I removed the axle nuts (which felt very tight) and also removed the two bolts at the bottom of the strut, pushed the axle back through the hub and greased the splines with high temp wheel bearing grease. I put the shaft back through the hub and retensioned the strut bolts and axle nuts. The noise disappeared. Whether the grease has any thing to do with it I'm not sure, but it doesn't require that much more work to grease the splines.

Re: T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

Í was wrong, it is the axle splines, like a clearance for material wear.
Í am going to engrase...
