Re: *Solved* T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

This sounds like the issue I am having with my 2008 t31 Manual Petrol.

My front wheels make a single thump noise when I brake, go over a speed hump, or turn right over slightly bumpy parts of the road,eg. driveways etc. I thought it was the engine mounts going. Ill get my mech to check it first thing in the morning!

Nice solution!

Re: *Solved* T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise

hi
Just wondering if it is really that common. mine was clicking from bout 3000kms and they only fixed it at my 6month service... at 7500km. is there any likely damage caused being the driveshafts?
Cheers

Re: *Solved* T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

I'm glad to find this thread again. I rang Nissan dealer about this problem, they booked this coming Tuesday and keep the car for half a day. The technician told me that he has fixed the axle splines for a few Maxima but not the Xtrail. He said he's 90% sure that the click sound that I heard is from the axle splines. My xtrail has the click sound problem as SXTRAIL described.

James, I had a test drive on a brand new CVT xtrail (50km on the clock) a few months back and it has the same click sound as mine. I thought it was from the gearbox, the technician who took a test drive with me told me that Nissan Australia was still figuring out how to fix the problem at that time, I hope they know it's from the axle splines by now.

I totally disagree with Rich regarding to pay the dealer to fix it, if the car has problem while it's still under the warranty, Nissan technicians's job is to DIAGNOSE problems and FIX it. I like technicians because I think they are honest people but I hate the admin people and service advisers with a passion as they always try to deny if your car has problem need to be fixed.

By the way, in a recent survey by JD Power regarding to after sales service in Australia, Nissan situated well below avarage in the chart.

Well mine has the clicking sound coming from the front left wheel, looks like it could be the axle splines described here, taking it back on Tuesday for them to have it checked out, I'll make sure they know about this issue.

Re: *Solved* T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

When I took it back on Tuesday the mechanic I spoke to knew about the problem and said he would do the other side as well.
When I went to collect it he also said that the drive shaft nut was so loose that the locking pin was the only thing holding it on.
Glad I had it checked.

Interesting comment from Jupitor 2. 6 months ago I took my Exy in for its 10k service and mentioned the clicking noise. Mine was put down to a loose drive shaft nut as well. Hope I didn't get a 'friday' car, because now the drivers side door trim is coming away at the handle/armrest.

Re:

Hi everyone,
I'm new to Australian X-Trail and it's taking me time to work through all the forum posts.
Although I have a few queries to put to you guys in the future, this post really attracted my attention
as I may have the same problem and it concerns me.
I bought my X-Trail Ti new in June 2010 and right from the start, it has made a little clicking noise.
It happens when I move off from a standstill on a slight hill in forward and reverse. Driving normally
I might add.
In my case, there is only one click - not several in a row.
It doesn't happen every time I take off.
Now here's the part that may make sense to all those who have had this noise:
This little click makes a similar noise to the noise that is made when I tap the end of my finger nail
on the little plastic cover at the centre of my alloy wheels. Consider also that my X-Trail
is fitted with the 18" factory wheels. To those of you that have the 18" wheels and the clicking - is that what your clicking sounds like?
Thank you.
Rogan

Re: *Solved* T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

Took my T31 to Lakeside Nissan for it's 50K Service and mentioned that I have noticed a clicking sound at the front when lifting off accelerator. I asked them to check the Axle splines for grease and tightness.

They did the service fine and said that they had also greased the splines - no disassemble of parts, just apply grease from outside of hubs on both front axles.

As soon as I drove off I couldn't believe how much smoother the car felt; and the click is gone.

Just greasing those splines had made the car much quieter and smoother when taking off and driving.

Makes you wonder because that area is meant to be a lifetime grease, not ~40,000kms.

Rogan1 - when I drive off each morning especially when reversing first time out of driveway, there is always one click that sound like the brake calipers/pads settling to new direction of motion. Done it since I bought the car.

Re: *Solved* T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

I guess I might be adding myself to the list with this problem in my TS.

I've noticed the clicking for a little while now, and characterised it as occurring with changes in power / torque, especially through taking the foot off the accelerator suddenly or engaging/disengaging the clutch. Sounds like a clunk when the window is up, or a higher pitched metallic click when the window is down.

Had my TS in for its 20k km service during the week at the dealer, mentioned the problem, and when returning the car they said they pulled the front right axle, inspected and greased it as there was no lubricant there.

Only problem is that the click hasn't gone yet. Will have to visit the dealer again and get them to look again.

Re: *Solved* T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

Good mornings,

I've had the TS back to the dealer for the second attempt (Tuesday last week) to make the click, ting, thingy noise go away.

It seemed to disappear for a couple of days, but started to reappear again (Thursday last week). It appears to be increasing in frequency again.

Do you have any other suggestions (they knew about the grease, I told them about loose nuts mentioned in an earlier post) that I could give to Nissan for them to check as a potential cause?

The sound is as per my previous post, happening most noticably with removal of torque from the system (which may only be because the engine is quieter then compared to adding torque) and is particularly noticable with clutch usage - which of course is a complete unloading of the system.

Any ideas?

ta muchlies.
