T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

Howdy folks,
My diesel TL has nearly done 45,000km. I noticed the other day while driving along that when i changed gears i was getting a clicking sound coming from the front of the car.
At first i thought it had something to do with the clutch but investigating it further revealed that it does it when you put torque on the drive train. It is more pronounced when shifting from 1st to second, however you can hear it when taking off or changing down gears.
Lately it has been clicking a few times, indicating it is getting worse. It isnt something stuck in the tyres as it does it in the dirt carpark aswell.

I took it into Lakeside and got them to have a listen. It demonstrated it and they took note. I have it booked in for them to have a look at on monday. The service manager has asked me to leave it there for the day as they may need to pull things apart.

It doesnt make it worse going around corners so i doubt its a CV joint, im thinking along the lines of an engine mount as it does it under torque, most engine torque is used when taking off in the lower gears.

Will report back on monday when i find out more.

Re: Clicking from front right hand side

It turns out that the clicking is caused by the front axle splines lacking grease.

They removed the assemblies and regreased them, now the click is gone and it runs perfectly.
If you are concerned, maybe ask them to do it while they do your steering recall modifications.
Weirdly, my fuel consumption dropped on the way home dunno if it was related?

All the work was done free under warranty.

Thanks Lakeside nissan! You guys rock!

Re: *Solved* T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

this is the same problem they have on the J31 maximas. their all auto so when you put in it drive or reverse you hear a clicking from the front. only some do it though, i think driveshaft nuts tensions also have a role to play....

Correct. The mechanic recognised the click from a job he did on a Maxima here in Adelaide.

I asked why it would have dried up by now, to which the answer was that they do not grease them properly at the factory, and now that it has been disassembled, greased and reassembled it will last a very long time and reduce wear.

Andrew
Which splines were they, the ones in the gearbox or the ones in the front wheels?

Re: *Solved* T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

Ahh very interesting....my diesel TS manual is around 45000km also and I have a similar noise, more of a clunk than a click. I was thinking along the lines of engine mounts too.

I will mention this solution to the dealer when i report it.

Thanks for sharing!

Re: *Solved* T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

While having my fuel and steering recalls done on Friday, I asked the guy about the T31 splines needing to be regreased. He said he has only heard of the maximas having that issue not the T31's. I said it has happened to someone I know and Nissan covered it under warranty. He said until its official we can't do anything.

The car will be back in the next few months for its 20k service so I will try again to get them to do it under warranty. I mean im just trying to be proactive at the end of the day emoticon

Hey Sam, unfortunately, while you may think you're being pro-active, the dealer would be the one footing the bill unless they get the go-ahead from Nissan Head Office. If you're really concerned, perhaps let them know you'd be willing to pay them to do it?
