brake shuddering - 4WD lock, flashing 4WD

Hey guys

I would like to share a Oh no mo moment with my 2004 X Trail. The other day the brakes started shuddering, not the rhythmetic pulsing from a warped disk but spasmotically and this caused the stearing to shudder as well. So drove slowely home and the Lock 4WD showed on the dash. The car is always in auto and I dont drive it hard so this was not normal. After a few minutes the 4WD light came up, then started flashing. I had to turn it to 2WD to continue.

So not only were the brakes not working properly, the 4WD was having major issues and overheating.

Well that was it - I could just hear the mechanic saying "oh about 2 grand" smiling at me.... emoticon ...

I rang a mate who works for the RACT in the breakdown service, had a chat and he suggested a few things. The info from here was invaluable and helped diagnose the issue.

It was the rear hall sensor for the ABS that was the issue - I had a rear wheel bearing replaced 3 months ago and the mechanic obviously forgot to tighten the 12mm bolt to the sensor and it came away just enough not to pick up the rear wheel. So the poor computer didn't know what the rear left wheel was doing, when slowing down the car thought the wheel was in a lock up so tried to adjust the remainder and when going forward the rear left wheel wasn't assisting so all power went to the rear wheel and overheated the fluid in the 4WD components.............

2 minutes later & 5 turns with a 12mm spanner - it was fixed

just goes to show - eh

hope this can help someone

Thats a nice diagnosis and great fix mate emoticon

Times like that when you wish you could go back to "dizzies and carbies" and not worry that a wheel sensor will disable your car emoticon
