posticon Hi-Tech Cat. Back System (T31 Manual Diesel)

Image

Dear Members,

It is with great pleasure that I announce the successful design and implementation of the very first cat. back exhaust system for the T31 manual diesel X-Trail.

I would like first to thank Andrew (dronus) for taking-up the offer I made on the forum asking for volunteers who'd willing to have Hi-Tech use their T31 exy to design a new exhaust system and Andrew put his hand up and has driven all the way from Adelaide to have this done, which am sure he's not regretting at the moment emoticon

Secondly, I would like to thank Hi-Tech headed by Lambros and Dwayne (in the Hi-Tech factory at Bathurst) for proving to me yet again that we have partnered not only with a top company in this business, but with someone that care about quality and craftsmanship so much that any suggestion to implement short-cuts or cut corners during the design of this system were simply ignored. That's how passionate the Hi-Tech Mufflers people are and our forum means a LOT to them.

In this report, I will not go through why Hi-Tech was chosen as our partner to design and develop an exhaust system for the T31 X-Trail and I won't go through the facts of why their system is the BEST on the market in terms of quality, price and proven results, you can read the history about the Australian X-Trail Forum and Hi-Tech partnership HERE

Same warranty and the same quality and proven results also apply to this system and any exhaust system manufactured by Hi-Tech.

THE REPORT (Part 1)
===================

The design and development of the T31 manual diesel exhaust system started on 7/8/2009 at the Hi-Tech headquarters in Darlinghurst with myself and Lambros thinking of what can be done to the T31 diesel xtrail in terms of the exhaust system and if doing a cat. back system as well as a full exhaust system (consisting of extractors and high flow cat.) was a viable option like the T30 xtrail model.

After careful consideration and seeing that the T31 diesel xtrail has a DPF located in the engine bay followed by a cat converter under the car (which has stainless steel core I should add) and also due to the hi power and torque output of the T31 diesel as it is right from the factory, we decided that doing a full exhaust system for the diesel is not a good idea, given the different sensors that are in operation which might cause problems to owners.

The decision was made to proceed with the design of the cat. back system and offer it in more than just one style and combination.

We have discussed different routing options for the exhaust pipes and the location of the mufflers and tips and this has helped us form a pretty good idea of what needs to be done at the factory in Bathurst were this system would be created and tested.

I will conclude this first report by saying that the T31 diesel xtrail was dynoed before any modifications were done to it to determine the factory output in terms of power and torque and to help us measure any gains very accurately.

The second report will give you a run-down of the available cat. back options for the T31 manual diesel xtrail and will have pics showing them.

THE REPORT (Part 2)
==================

On 11/8/09 Lambros, myself and Andrew headed to Bathurst to start work on the T31 manual diesel exy exhaust system and the following photos will show you the stock standard exhaust system for the T31 which am sure you're familiar with:

Notice the monster Nissan muffler.

The following photo shows the factory cat. back system removed:

This is the factory cat. converter under the T31 exy which will remain un-touched

The following pics will show the design and creation process of the T31 cat. back system

The T31 Manual Diesel Cat. Back System will be offered in the following combinations:

Option #1 Twins Cat. Back System

This system is the top of the line cat. back system for the T31 diesel which starts from the factory cat. converter in 2.5 inch pipe and ends with a twin muffler and twin tail-pipe set-up in 2 inch pipe to optimize gains at the lower and mid range RPM ranges where it's most needed.

The installation of this system requires the lower lip of the bumper to be cut to shape to accommodate the exhaust tips as follows. I have made templates for the cut-outs which will be sent with the exhaust system, so any muffler shop can follow this template and know exactly what to do without mucking around too much or damaging your bumper:

Image Image Image Image

The 2.5inch pipe comes start at the cat. converter and ends at joint pipe section splitter where the size of it is reduced to 2inch and router through to both sides of the car to position two small stainless steel mufflers as follows:

Only one additional muffler support bracket needs to be added to the support the right hand side muffler and this supporting bracket will be supplied by Hi-Tech with the system. The installation process of this cat. back system is super easy and can be done right in your own driveway.

Option #2 Straight-Through Single Muffler Cat. Back System

This system has been mainly designed for those on a tight budget and would like to get the full power and torque increase potentials that come with the Twins set-up cat. back system but don't want to spend extra for looks.

It uses exactly the same mid section pipe and ends in a single straight through muffler with an awesome looking exhaust tip. No bumper cutting is required for this option as it uses the same outlet space as the factory muffler. The difference is that this muffler is much smaller than the factory monster one and sounds MUCH quieter than the factory exhaust system as well, which is a bonus for the T31 diesel which can done with a bit of sound reducing components emoticon

In the following report I will go through the dyno runs and results.

THE REPORT (Part 3)
==================

As I stated above, the T31 manual diesel xtrail was dynoed before and after the installation of the cat. back system.

The dyno used is a new type which is considered to be the most accurate to get the readings as it uses stand-alone hub rotators (not sure of the exact name) that get bolted onto each hub using the wheel studs. Just like this:

Image

Here are some pics of Andrew's T31 during the dyno run

Image Image Image

T31 diesel (manual transmission) factory (flywheel) figures as advertised by Nissan are as follows:

127KW @ 3,750RPM POWER
360Nm @ 2,000RPM TORQUE

Here is the combined dyno chart showing the BEFORE and AFTER dyno runs emoticon

Image

So, how did we stack-up with the first cat. back system for the T31 manual diesel exy (in the world I reckon)?

Well, the dyno chart speaks for itself and the results are as follows:

7.8KW POWER gain maxed at 119.2KW (at the wheels)
24.4Nm TORQUE gain maxed at 346.0Nm (at the wheels)

The power gain is pretty much similar to that of the T30 xtrail, but that massive torque gain is really re-assuring and can be felt as soon as you press the accelerator and notice how freely the T31 diesel runs through RPMs and how easy it shift gears.

We have actually managed to spin the wheels of the T31 exy changing from 1st to 2nd gear while climbing up a hilly road, but that's not all.

Andrew has reported that his fuel consumption during the run back to Sydney has gone down from 6.5LT/100kms to 5.7LT/100kms which is just amazing!!!

This concludes the 3rd report. In my next report I will announce pricing and a VERY exciting offer to members of the Australian X-Trail Forum where great savings can be made to those who wish to order the T31 diesel cat. back system and join the Hi-Tech power group emoticon

Re: Hi-Tech Cat. Back System (T31 Manual Diesel)

Arrived back into Adelaide late last night after the rain in Victoria delayed our departure.

I can confirm that the twin system fitted to my car makes no droning noises on the highway or on acceleration. It is very quiet.

The diesel exy is normally very torquey but the improvement is very noticeable especially when overtaking on the highway in the higher gears.

On Saturday on the way to Albury i enjoyed fuel consumption around 6.5l/100 (still need to work it out from the fuel docket)

On Sunday we were driving into a 60-70km/hr westerly headwind which was bending over those plastic sign posts, and i had the roof pod on and the car full of kids and associated crap and we averaged 8.0l/100 which is pretty good considering how nasty it was outside.

2 thumbs up for the hi-tech system.

If anyone in Adelaide wants to have a look at it, PM me or lets organise another meetup soon anyway!

Re: Hi-Tech Cat. Back System (T31 Manual Diesel)

Hi Jalal,

Is most of the advantage of these systems because of the free flowing muffler? Would it not be possible (and far cheaper) to cut off the original muffler and replace it with a muffler similar to your single system, to recieve similar results? I'm assuming the rest of the piping is the same diameter as original, with a few less bends perhaps.

Not trying to downgrade what you have made available here, but as it is out of my price range it would be interesting to know the possibilities.

I know with previous V6 magna's I have owned that good gains were possible simply by changing the muffler only.

Andrew would be the best person to answer your question about the "cheaper" systems which he had experienced first hand on his T30 when he had one.

If you read the previous designs and quality of the Hi-Tech systems for the T30 you will realize that they're worth every cent spent on them in the long run due to many factors which I have already highlighted in the T30 exhaust thread, so I suggest you read them carefully before trying to modify your exhaust system the cheap way.

There's 2 ways to spend around $1000 on an exhaust system

Doing it right (and complete) the first time

Doing bits and pieces over and over again trying to save money

I found out a number of years ago it's a lot easier doing method 1.
