My little drive in the country during Aug/Sept 09

On the 27th of September I shall be leaving Brisbane for a scenic tour of central Aussieland.

There are only a few set dates and the rest is up to what ever happens.
Leaving Brissy on the 27/09/09 to ventrue to Lake Eyre via the Strzelecki Track and visit the surounding area with my camera.
Then its off to the Birdsville Track to be at Birdsville in time for the races, also to stay there a few days and visit the local area.
Once the races are over and I ahve seen all that I want to see, then its off to Boulia. Once there to have a rest and to check the conditions of the Plenty HWY. I plan on getting to Alice Springs via the Plenty if the conditions are good.
At the moment I have put aside about a good 10 days to see as much as I can between Alice Springs and Ayres Rock and everywhere else I can get too in that time. While still leaving 3-4 days to get back to Rockhampton.
I hope to have an extra day or 3 to get back to Rocky via Tennant Ck, Mt Isa to Charters Towers. If I am very lucky with time I may even make it to Townsville and come back down the coast.

I bought he exy with this all planned. Since I am not doing any mountain climbing the exy should be completely capable of getting me everywhere I want to go. Maybe even onto big red at Birdsville if I am lucky.

Sounds like fun. I under took a simular trip last year where I cut across the Plenty Hwy to Alice Springs. Just a quick word of advice from my experince, you have plenty of people tell you along the way that the Exy won't make it and you would be crazy to try. I'll tell you now thats not true, I under took the trip in my 2WD XLT V6 Ford courier (before I got the new Exy) towing a camper trailer and my inlaws were in a Mazda Tribute towing a camper trailer and we did not have a single problem. Just take your time and enjoy the view.

Thread moved to the planned events and trips section. The trip report can be posted after the actual trip takes place.

Sorry Jalal

Yeah I'm not too worried about what the road will be like; as the guy who recently did some work on my house took his old torana on the same track about 3 years ago.

One thing is that I will not be in any hurry. Have 2 weeks after my planned return as time in case I need a couple more days.

Hi Maryann

Can I suggest that from Alice Springs you take the Namatjira Drive / Mereenie Loop Road / Luritja Road route to Uluru (via Kings Canyon)? Take the time to stop along the way and see "Simpson's Gap", "Standley Chasm" (good camp site here), and the "Serpentine" and "Ormiston" gorges. These were spectacular, to say the least emoticon

Half of this route is bitumen (the first and last bits) and the rest is deeply corrigated (bull dust filled) ruts, but nothing our exy (ladened to the hilt and towing a heavy camper trailer) couldn't handle.

Image

Don't forget to take a couple of spare memory cards for your camera (we had to buy an extra one) for all the photos you'll take. I would love to take the trip again, but perhaps not so soon. It is really a spectacular place (the outback) and I am actually jealous of your planned itinery.

Good luck and emoticon

(looking forward to seeing your pics and report upon your return)

EDIT

PS
If you'd like to meet up for a wee little outing prior to your departure, let us know.

Re: My little drive in the country during Aug/Sept 09

Photography is a hobby for me. So I have heaps of extra bits for the new camera and i'm taking my work laptop with me to d/l every night.

I've been looking around on the net for what else to see out there on the 'red centre drive',. So far its 4 days around Ayres rock, 3 days Kings Canyon and 4 days Alice Springs.

Overall plans have changed slightly. Its now leave Brissy and drive to Lake Eyre. Spend 4 days and then onto Coober Pedy for a day. Then onto Ayres Rocks/Kings Canyon and Alice Springs. Then back to Rocky.

I can go to the Birdsville races any other year, so I'll be dropping it off this drive.

Did you need to use extra fuel from cans at any time? I'm taking 30litres for 'just in case'.

Only because some servo's out there only sold "bio" fuels and I didn't want to run it. Plus, we were able to fill 2 x 20 litre jerry cans at a decent price (however, in saying that - the prices in some outback towns was comparable with those of Brisbane - some even cheaper - go figure? 8( )

Mine is diesel, so I hope I don't get stuck with bio diesel.
Hmm so fair chance fuel will be cheaper than what I pay up here. I'm hoping that is the case.
Think I'll be taking a 20L and a 10L pair of cans with me. Just in case I run into a diesel that I don't want.

Thanks Stephen

Re: My little drive in the country during Aug/Sept 09

I'm chafing at the bit here, can't wait for Tuesday to come around for the final pack of the last goods into the exy and go wake up my Sister-in-law for the drive to Brisbane.
She keeps saying 4am, and I keep reminding her 2am, lets see what happens.

Basket is on the roof with a solar panel permernantly installed, 52L pipe for water around it and a water proof carry bag under it. 2x 10L jerry cans for my extra diesel incase I want it.
Fridge and esky are in with the 2 spares tyres and the board for me to sleep on. A few boxes of drinking water and plastic containers to put everything else in are in. Very little else to do other than take a few photos and put them up here before I go. And its only Saturday night ><

Oh I have a 600W inverter with the spare battery in its box. I plan on downloading any photos each night to both the laptop HDD and the external HDD (I am paranoid about saving data, since I know how easily it can be damaged).

I'll attached the photos tomorrow after I do the main part of the packing, everything except me and the food.

Sounds like your carrying quite a fair bit of weight there, have you taken it for a test drive to see how the the Xy travels Scaeryann?
