First, I am really surprised that it turned-out to be the O2 sensor, as a faulty O2 sensor will generate a check engine light and an error code with it, but it will also make the car overheat.

I will believe the problem is fixed only when my wife and/or I drive the car ourselves! Why does it cause the car to overheat? From running too lean?

I asked Carmel previously if she had seen the car running hot and she said that was the first thing she checked when it started to play up, and that the temperature was fine.

ok so
1 x o2 sensor $150
1 x crank pos sensor $50
5 x labour @ $95 = 475
4 x spark plugs $20?
GST??

but CPS wasnt faulty, replaced because my wife said "ok". she wouldnt have said ok if she knew it was going to total over $700!!! They said it was the old style, same as the recall. I asked why it wasnt replaced as a recall item. "vehicle is outsde of recall range" so i said the CPS sensor is fine then, they said yes! So i asked for it back, will sell on ebay!

we got the labour dropped to 2.5 hours

so the total dropped to $485
i want the car back.

i'm over it. under $500 im just glad to get it back.

just called dandenong nissan and asked them a hypothetical, "do you charge for diagnosis, and what would you charge if it took 15 hours labour time to diagnose".

"Yes we charge for diagnosis, we would come to an arrangement if it took that long"

so I'm just unlucky they tried the o2 sensor last.

Tim,

A faulty O2 sensor will send the wrong signal to the ECU and the temperature needle, so the needle will jump to the red line showing overheating, but the car itself won't overheat if you open the bonnet and have a look.

It should generate a check engine light for sure and an error code with it, so am still at loss as to how Nissan missed that code when they plugged in their consult.

At least you got your car back and hopefully it's the end of your problems.

well there was no fault code...

they put the sensor into another xtrail and it experienced the same symptoms...

im a little dubious myself, but I asked if they were 100% certain it was fixed, they said absolutely. if not they will certainly know about it!!!! emoticon

If not fixed, they guarantee their work, will go for full refund and take it elsewhere.

Tim.
