engine problems.. wrecker in melbourne??
Hi all,
having some engine problems, and expecting the worst, want to start tracking down a wrecker in melb for a replacement 2nd hand engine.
symptoms are:
- occasional loss of power to about 4000 rpm when all of a sudden it takes off (from stand still, when driving, it seems ok)
- shakes and stalls occasionally at idle
- visible dark smoke from exhaust when taking off from stand still
- apparently engine sounds ok.
whats been done:
- a service and some diagnostics - nothing found to be at fault, car didnt play up during service test drive.
- compression test - results all good.
- they requested that we return the vehicle in 1000km to check for excessive oil consumption.
I requested they check the catalytic converter and butterfly screws, but neither were done. sent an email regarding this - not happy
after service, car was still playing up on the trip home. only seems to play up under load, ie up hills, corners etc.
Unfortunately I'm out of the country for 2 more weeks, so this is all second hand information from my partner.
I'm afraid its the C/C, or butterfly screws. Already prepared for the worst!
So if anyone knows any decent cheapish wreckers where I can source a decent motor, and somewhere to get it fitted, it would be much appreciated. If it turns out to be a not so serious problem, all well and good. I just like to be prepared.
Thanks for the help/advice/whatevers.

Re: engine problems.. wrecker in melbourne??
Hi Tim.
Sorry to hear about your Xy, I must admit, it doesn't sound good.
I'm in Sydney so I can't really help you with finding wreckers in Melbourne.
You should also try interstate wreckers as I know a lot of Sydney based wreckers do deliver state wide.
Hopefully it is a minor fix and doesn't cost you too much.

Re: engine problems.. wrecker in melbourne??
thanks!
I've already resigned to the fact that it's going to be expensive. What im mostly pissed off about is the fact that FTG Nissan were asked to check both catalytic converter, AND butterfly screws, but did neither, just gave it an oil change, tranny fluid change, and basically a clean bill of health and sent it on it's way.
When asked if they checked the butterfly screws, they said it's too hard as they have to "split the engine in half". WHAT THE HELL? I wish there was some recourse if you ask them to check something, but they dont check it, and then through their mis-diagnosis, the problem worsens beyond repair. They should be liable for their decisions with other peoples vehicles, especially when they are the so called experts.
Sorry I'm just venting. it's worse as it's now the weekend and I doubt they will take it on a saturday morning, so we wont have any answers till next week.
Am tempted to tackle the engine change myself.. have a whole month off work... anyone done an engine change themselves?
Tim.

Re: engine problems.. wrecker in melbourne??
Tim,
I can help you with a couple of wreckers in Sydney who freight nation-wide and they have plenty of xtrails here. Send me a PM.
I can also give you a phone number of a family friend in Melbourne who has a wrecker yard (for older cars) and he'll probably be able to help you find an engine through his wrecker network.
A second hand engine will cost around $2,500 (plus freight) and you can get a low mileage one (around 75K to 80K on it)
If it's the cat. converter failure and your xtrail was covered by recall and never done, then Nissan will be liable for the fix and also engine replacement.

Sounds promising Tim and hopefully it is only the fuel pump.

Re: engine problems.. wrecker in melbourne??
Hi Tim,
As Rich mentions, it might just be your crank angle sensor.
Get your dealer to hookup the Consult and watch it while YOU drive it to reproduce the fault as they monitor it.
The thing with faults and the ECU is that the fault has to pop up a couple of times in succession for it to be logged and shown as a fault with the chak engine lamp.
