Heavy gear change first thing in morning

I've noticed this since having my X-Trail that every morning when I first start up & reverse out of my driveway.
As soon as I go to select 1st gear & accelerate through 2nd,3rd etc the gear change is very heavy & you really have to push it to change then it frees up very quickly to the normal light change.
I usually change by palming or flicking with my fingertips but in the morning you wrap your hand around it & push & pull for the first few changes
There are no noises when changing the clutch works fine & it only does it after the car has been sitting all night.

Any ideas ?

Dave

I imagine with a manual that letting the car "warm up" idling in the driveway would not do anything for the oil in the transmission like in an automatic, but have you tried this ?

I have changed the transmission oil to a full sythetic one ( Castrol Syntran 75W-85 ) and it has transformed the gearbox. the shifts have improved out of sight when cold and I would highly recommend it.

Re: Heavy gear change first thing in morning

it has to do with oil viscosity. when its ice cold the oil will be quite thick until it heats up and thins out. if you let the car idle in neutral, the shafts are still moving inside the gearbox (but not transmitting drive) therefore there is friction therefore heat. ive seen cases of people putting a too thick oil in the trans and then they couldnt get it in gear the following cold morning.
on another note my olf vw g/box is quite worn and i put a thicker oil in to take up tolerances (and save me money haha) and it works a treat.

2 cents

I'll be having a look at that Syntrans, I used the recommended VMX80 for the last gearbox oil change and the gearshift is stiffer than it ever was with the original/dealer oil.
