Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

Thank you for your reply Jalal

Gary what do you think from your experience would be considered fair use in terms of the CVT? 100000km+ ? and or by time?

thanks

Re:

The CVT is a very durable transmission. It's invented in the Netherlands, by van Doorn) 'round 1954 (!!) so it has a long experience... (Heard someone say its a"new" transmission which is not. But again, I hear never any problems. I'm a member of the UK forum as well an never heard one problem. So I guess it's indeed a "one of."

Re:

You never heard the CVT problem on the UK Forum because UK Nissan didn't sell the Petrol CVT T31 and only the manual Diesel was made available to them. The CVT problem is real and not a one-off at all. This problem is shared by many other Nissan vehicle with CVT worldwide (just Google it).

The CVT concept back in 1954 might have worked well, but what Jatco in Japan have manufactured is completely different and it has problems. (until 2010 at least)

Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

Hi I bought an 08 xtrail Ti cvt about 4 months ago and have noticed some of the noises described on here about the rattle in the gearbox at low speeds with little or no acceleration, the car has only done 73,000klms. So I'm wondering should I take some course of action now in regards to a nissan out of warranty fix (because it has only done 73,000klms and shouldn't fail) or does the noise get worse and worse and the gearbox eventually fails? I have seen a lot of people on here comment on having the same problem but haven't seen much on if it gets worse or fails etc? Any help would be appreciated, thanks Brad

Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

I wouldn't worry!

I have been through the same dilemma and now realise that my T31 is a great car with some explainable low speed rattles that are simply a characteristic of the design and Not a fault.

Some would disagree with my view but my car has never actually failed or broken down!!

I think you will find that Actual Failure of T31 CVTs as against noises are rare. Some have experienced slippage on steep hills and/or reversing steep inclines but that may also be due to electronic malfunction or car going into limp mode or a sensor malfunction of some kind rather than the issue you are talking about

Later models have CVT transmissions that are an evolution of the original T31 CVT and have better electronic and mechanical control of harshness and vibration and "rattles".

After a few years of worrying and hassling Nissan Dealers I have accepted that the CVT is durable and should last as long as any other transmission.

Bearing noises would be the most worrying and a sign of immanent failure - but there are none.

Hi jalalski

To answer your question....
Good luck to you Larry and hope you enjoy the new car.

OK Guys back to the CVT topic in hand...

Not sure if you guys have seen the video posted by John which talks about the new and improved Nissan CVT transmission, but it is worth reading and watching HERE

It would be interesting to find out if this CVT transmission is interchangeable with what we now have in the T31, as this could be the solution to all the CVT problems if this can be done by Nissan.

I have a 10/2007 Ti X-Trail 177000k that I purchased and the CVT failed after 3 weeks, brought at auction so no warranty. After many phone calls a wrecker in Vic told me that the later 2010 on xtronic box will fit as long as you fit the TCM to match it. I took the risk and brought the xtronic CVT out of a 2012 with 40,000k on it and fitted it.
Cost of box and freight to TAS $1845.00. After fitting the car took 3 attempts to start, it started run and stalled 2 times but on the 3rd attempt it started and run like a dream. No warning lights and is much smother and has better acceleration. I contacted both my local nissan dealer and the nissan help line and was given a flat No to warranty or good will. I have only driven it for 4 days but so far I can't fault how it is running. I will keep you posted. Cheers Wayne

Re: T31 Low Speed Deceleration Rattle

Our T31 has done about 70,000 km and have had a hard to trace bearing type rattle noise that I have been trying to isolate for over 12 months. I reported it at the past three services but the mechanics couldn't find anything and as I was having trouble isolating it that was understandable. The noise was first noticed at night when driving out of a car park at slow speed. It could have been air conditioner, steering as was on a tight lock etc We have gone through the process of elimination and eliminated the air conditioner by having it off etc when we thought the driving condition was right for the noise to occur. The noise occurred when just over idle at about 1200 rpm and then backing off the accelerator back to essentially idle. It would not occur when in drive and driving against a hill etc so had to be moving.

The noise was also not noticeable when in 2WD. So I needed to be able to simulate the condition and try and identify the location of the noise without hiding in the engine bay while my wife drove the car emoticon

Yesterday I chocked the vehicle up off the ground so that I could have it just ticking over in 2WD, Auto and 4WD to try and simulate the problem. Bingo...the sound occurred when in Auto and 4WD and was coming from the front left which I believe is the transfer case area.

I contacted my Nissan Dealer to let them know I had isolated the noise and could replicate it by having the vehicle up on a hoist. It is booked in for the week after next to get checked by the mechanics.
