Bearings in the grooves inside the pulleys had disintegrated. I have rebuilt it (at my expense and time). It seems to me that the design could have been stronger. Nissan Australia has indicated that they will not reimburse my expenses... due to the age and kilometres it falls outside Nissan's scope for any financial assistance. After lasting 9yrs 1mth, and 172,860 km, would the CVT be considered sufficiently durable and meeting reasonable expectations? Given age and kms, is there any point in going to QCAT? nondisclosed_email@example.com (SimonC)Sat, 02 Oct 2021 18:33:44 +0000 Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kmshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2095346,from=rss#post2095346https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2095346,from=rss#post2095346I went through the same recently with a 3 year old 100,000km Suzuki Swift. Went to ACAT as the Regulators were useless. Got full refund for the whole car! Unfortunately you have to do the Civil court/Tribunal action before the Regulators will take any action, and in my case, they still didn't! Was told the chain in the CVT was damaged beyond repair and would need to be replaced. Same story as many here - would cost $9000+. Could any of you kind folk advise me what steps to take next? They are trying to get me to buy the new part or trade the car for a new one. I've looked after my X-trail and dont want to part with it... What do I do? Amazing that quote of $10, 000 came back as $8830 now reduced to $7179. After further discussions compiled full complaint (incl over 20 annexes) and submitted to numerous agencies including ACCC, Westpoint Auto, Nissan, Dept Fair Trade etc. Outcome was no budging from Nissan or Westpoint and Dept Fair Trade could only tell them legislation, but could not force them to do anything. So they suggested QCAT was only avenue. In the end due to many months drawn out, change of job location requiring increased driving to location without good public transport, home front etc decided only option was to repair it. This is where I found these wonderful guys Scott and Josh at 'The Transmission Centre' at Underwood QLD. After doing a free diagnostics (not just CVT system) and ordering in replacement Pressure Solenoids they dropped out the valve body and found the major problem. A valve stuck open affected the Pressure Solenoids that caused the belt to slip and wear away at the cones. These guys were fantastic taking the time out to not ony run me back and forwards to train station on numerous occassions, but also explain how CVT operates and show/explain all my damaged components. The belt edge was nearly smooth instead of teethed and cones badly pitted and worn causing belt slippage. They were surprised x-trail was still moving. The end result was a fully rebuilt CVT at a cost of $3850 with 12 months warranty (I had looked at 2nd hand from wreckers that would have cost similar). Have to take x-trail (that is running great) to them tomorrow so they can quickly inspect to make sure no leaks and they are still happy with their fantastic work. Highly recommend them to others that unfortunately experience same saga I went through, but would suggest going straight to QCAT (for QLD based x-traillers) after goodwill response is received.nondisclosed_email@example.com (almic)Thu, 16 Jun 2016 18:40:33 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2090976,from=rss#post2090976https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2090976,from=rss#post2090976Dept of Fair Trading is your first obvious choice.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Wed, 30 Mar 2016 11:40:54 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2090975,from=rss#post2090975https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2090975,from=rss#post2090975Looking into it now, not too sure how to go about it just yet 😒😒😒nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kpow)Wed, 30 Mar 2016 11:26:39 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2090970,from=rss#post2090970https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2090970,from=rss#post2090970Yeah mate, I'd take it further as well. Put it this way, since 2010 when Jatco addressed the CVT problem, the comment above and one other CVT failure case is all that I personally have come across on this forum to date. If you read the previous pages, it explains the problem experienced by Jatco when they designed the CVT transmission and they indeed fixed that across the entire CVT transmission range, not only for the X-Trail but all other CVT driven cars most of which use Jatco.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Fri, 25 Mar 2016 14:05:12 +0000 Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kmshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2090926,from=rss#post2090926https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2090926,from=rss#post2090926Hi folks, I've been reading this forum with interest as I'm looking to get a 'new' car, and the one I've seen around that makes my heart go pitter-patter is the X-trail. I've admired them on the road, drooled over them in carparks, and accosted owners to ask them if they're happy with them (mixed response). I've sat in the drivers seat of a 2008 petrol CVT auto, been shown the back cargo area... but haven't driven one. I've also been doing a bit of research on the X-trail and its competitors. The reason I don't already own one is the CVT. The horror stories. The battles with dealers. The repair bills. The noise. Reading this thread was depressing stuff... until it seemed all was well in the T31 series 3 onwards, late 2010 on. My hopes lifted. But, the previous comment by Kpow on here is about a 2011 model with CVT problems. There seem to be reports on all sides of other Nissan cars with CVT problems. Is the 'improved' CVT really improved significantly? Isn't it still a Jatco unit? Is it still noisy, is it still tricky to drive? Is it going to need replacing? Is there any real evidence that the late 2010 onwards CVT is OK? Technical info on how it differs from the earlier ones? Or are we relying on the lack of high numbers of reports of problems? Would love to hear your thoughts. nondisclosed_email@example.com (fishwish)Fri, 25 Mar 2016 10:50:37 +0000 Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kmshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2090844,from=rss#post2090844https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2090844,from=rss#post2090844Hey all, thought I would chime in as this is the closest thread I could find on the forums to what I'm after. I have a 2011 stl.... Mentioned problems with the CVT when taking off etc etc at the 70k service (last one while still under warranty) about a year ago and it came back all good, apparently 'drove like normal'. Since then had other companies service it for the rest of them with a couple of oil changes myself. It's out of warranty now and I just dropped it in to nissan for the 100k service and mentioned the CVT problems again. Phone rings ..... and the oil is all burnt or something and they say it's buggered and requires replacement...... At a cost of 7k!!!!!!!!! 'Good will' claim going in but he didn't seem very confident. Anyone had luck with the 'out of warranty' replacements? Or the whole 'good will' application? I reported it at the past three services but the mechanics couldn't find anything and as I was having trouble isolating it that was understandable. The noise was first noticed at night when driving out of a car park at slow speed. It could have been air conditioner, steering as was on a tight lock etc We have gone through the process of elimination and eliminated the air conditioner by having it off etc when we thought the driving condition was right for the noise to occur. The noise occurred when just over idle at about 1200 rpm and then backing off the accelerator back to essentially idle. It would not occur when in drive and driving against a hill etc so had to be moving. The noise was also not noticeable when in 2WD. So I needed to be able to simulate the condition and try and identify the location of the noise without hiding in the engine bay while my wife drove the car Yesterday I chocked the vehicle up off the ground so that I could have it just ticking over in 2WD, Auto and 4WD to try and simulate the problem. Bingo...the sound occurred when in Auto and 4WD and was coming from the front left which I believe is the transfer case area. I contacted my Nissan Dealer to let them know I had isolated the noise and could replicate it by having the vehicle up on a hoist. It is booked in for the week after next to get checked by the mechanics. nondisclosed_email@example.com (JohKer)Sat, 30 May 2015 11:16:35 +0000 Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kmshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2087591,from=rss#post2087591https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2087591,from=rss#post2087591Hi jalalski To answer your question.... Good luck to you Larry and hope you enjoy the new car. OK Guys back to the CVT topic in hand... Not sure if you guys have seen the video posted by John which talks about the new and improved Nissan CVT transmission, but it is worth reading and watching HERE It would be interesting to find out if this CVT transmission is interchangeable with what we now have in the T31, as this could be the solution to all the CVT problems if this can be done by Nissan. I have a 10/2007 Ti X-Trail 177000k that I purchased and the CVT failed after 3 weeks, brought at auction so no warranty. After many phone calls a wrecker in Vic told me that the later 2010 on xtronic box will fit as long as you fit the TCM to match it. I took the risk and brought the xtronic CVT out of a 2012 with 40,000k on it and fitted it. Cost of box and freight to TAS $1845.00. After fitting the car took 3 attempts to start, it started run and stalled 2 times but on the 3rd attempt it started and run like a dream. No warning lights and is much smother and has better acceleration. I contacted both my local nissan dealer and the nissan help line and was given a flat No to warranty or good will. I have only driven it for 4 days but so far I can't fault how it is running. I will keep you posted. I have been through the same dilemma and now realise that my T31 is a great car with some explainable low speed rattles that are simply a characteristic of the design and Not a fault. Some would disagree with my view but my car has never actually failed or broken down!! I think you will find that Actual Failure of T31 CVTs as against noises are rare. Some have experienced slippage on steep hills and/or reversing steep inclines but that may also be due to electronic malfunction or car going into limp mode or a sensor malfunction of some kind rather than the issue you are talking about Later models have CVT transmissions that are an evolution of the original T31 CVT and have better electronic and mechanical control of harshness and vibration and "rattles". After a few years of worrying and hassling Nissan Dealers I have accepted that the CVT is durable and should last as long as any other transmission. Bearing noises would be the most worrying and a sign of immanent failure - but there are none.
