Brand New TS Wierd Creaking Noise in steering/suspension

Hi Guys

I finally got to pick up my brand new T31 TS diesel on Friday and have been enjoying driving this car. However something wierd has come up....

Yesterday (Sunday 15th), a wierd creaking type of noise can be heard and felt through the steering coloumn....most noticeable when going slow...as if you were going to park or go up the driveway. It can be the slightest of movement of the steering wheel which causes this, and also if you go over bumps at slow speed, you can hear the same noise. If I have someone else move the wheel with the engine off, I get down and feel the spring on both the left and right front wheels, and you can hear the noise and definitely feel it creaking.

Now the car only has 300km on the clock. I have contacted the dealer to have this fixed BEFORE the first service as it is a bit off putting. However, my car can`t be seen until Thursday. I suspect it may just need some grease somewhere but I just don`t know for sure. The car was built in July, but only bought 4 days ago...so perhaps it could have been sitting in their holding yard all that time not moving a wheel......my reasoning being that maybe it`s hardened up grease etc....dunno.

Has anyone else experienced this in the past? Is there something simple that I could try without wasting hours waiting for the dealer? Do you think perhaps it could be a safety issue?

Depending on how ca$hed up you are you could get a 2nd opinion at a suspension place that does a safety check and report??? They would probably do the job while-U-wait

Further to the above problem, when it went in for it`s first service, they fixed the noise by lubricating something in the steering or suspension. Now, 1000km later, the noise is back!!! So it will be going back to the service centre again....I hope Nissan aren`t bad quality cars....I`m starting to regret my purchase I think.

Nissans are not bad cars, but it is impossible to find a perfect car regardless of the brand, so little problems can surface every now and then and as long as the the problems can be fixed, there is nothing to worry about or regret.

Re: Brand New TS Wierd Creaking Noise in steering/suspension

i thought i had some problems with the steering column as well. Basically, when i turned the car left or right, i would feel a slightly vibration on my left feet, which is usually placed on the plastic piece where the clutch pedal would be if i were driving a Manual vehicle. The problem is intermittent and sometimes, the vibration is more obvious than other times.

Later i found out it was because my floor mat was not mounted on the "fitting point" on the floor and the mat has slide up to rub against the steering column. This was the reason i felt the strange vibration. After i fitted the floor mat properly, the problem disappeared.

I presume your problem is not as newbie as mine? emoticon

Haha I wish it was that simple! No mate, my problem is very much within the suspension system. It`s like the springs are binding. If I get someone to even move the steering wheel slightly, I can get down and feel the springs creaking. I think they may need to be remounted and the bearing plates possibly lubricated. Hopefully it`ll be fixed tomorrow when I get in. I`ll post the results.

Mate, I think I have the same noise in mine. Its like a light clunk in the front suspension, quite often when turning after reversing. Reminds me of the kind of noise a worn ball joint might make.
To be honest I can't be bothered doing anything about it with the dealer, its too much of a hassle and i need the car on the road for work. Its been there since new, but its very subtle and not getting worse.
I'll be interested to find out what it is though, post back if you find out anything.

Re: Brand New TS Wierd Creaking Noise in steering/suspension

Ok guys....I`m back

Left the car with the dealer on Thursday morning at 7am. They said that the car should be ready by lunch time.

At 11am, I received a call from the dealer. he reported that they did what they thought would fix the noise, but upon another test drive, the noise was still there. So they rang Nissan and asked for their advice. Nissan told them to do this certain thing and once they knew that, advised me that they`d need the car for a further 4 hours or so. I told them that that was fine as I just want the car fixed once and for all.

At 15.30, I received another call from the dealer, who told me that the car was ready. When I went down, he described to me what they had to do. He showed me the docket for parts that they ordered and it included bearings, struts and something else. He also mentioned how the springs weren`t installed properly and were loose inside the rubbing bearing.....can`t remember exactly....I`m a little confused. He told me that due to the fact that they had to wait for the parts to arrive from Japan, they didn`t want to inconvenience me any further, so they took the parts off of a brand new x-trail in the yard.

So I got home, and noticed brand new springs and everything visible to the eye behind the 2 front wheels. My wife and I went for a 600km trip in to the mountains this past weekend, including some very rough dirt roads, and I can gladly report that the noise has definitely stopped, AND the suspension is quieter and smoother than it was before.

So in conclusion, I`m very very happy with the end result, and hopefully the problem is gone forever.
Thanks guys
Neil

I've heard of dealers doing some crazy things, but taking from one Xy to give to another, WOW.
Normally they'd just wait for the parts to arrive.
It was probably the bushes they replaced on the front end as well not the bearings. Bushes are usually the first thing that bring on squeaks.
Happy its all sorted for you.
