Paul, it sounds to me like the manual mode of the CVT is playing-up rather than the standard CVT. It may be finding difficulty selecting the correct gear for hill climbs in manual mode for some reason.

Re: No Power

I've just dropped mine to Nissan for the same reason .... Nissan said that if there was no warning light at the time of the fault then there would be no record of the error in the computer.

But Paul ... you've descibed the problem exactly as it sounds. Like the CVT has picked the wrong gear.

I'll get back to you this afternoon with the report (if any) from Nissan

Cheers

Craig

Re: No Power

THE RESULTS ARE IN!

No surprises here. Nissan can't find an error within the ECU..... "so good luck with that" was the response I was offered.

I asked if they had come across an error like this before .... "Nah .... thanks for coming"

Re: No Power

Forever the optimist, I'm hoping that I get some more constructive answers on Friday when they have a look at mine. Having said that, going on past experience I'm realistically expecting some more of "I'm sorry but we couldn't find any error codes so there's nothing we can do".

I filled in a customer satisfaction questionairre after the last time they looked at it and slated them for a number of things. Guess I'll find out on Friday if it did any good.

Well, my optimistic side has taken another beating!

I just been to pick the car up from the garage and got another version of the "I'm sorry but we couldn't find any error codes so there's nothing we can do" speech. They were very apologetic about it this time but the end result is the same. I can sympathize with them as they have nothing to go on.......there were no lights flashing on the dash, it only happens randomly and can't be replicated, it happens with ESP on & off and there are no error codes on the computer. I can only assume that the car is reacting to something (not sure what the something is or even whether it is actually there) and it's pre-programed action given this input it to increase (and lock?) the gear ratio. Whether that is a faulty sensor or a faulty gearbox or somehow faulty programming in the ECU I have no idea but clearly whatever it is the car itself doesn't think it is in error and therefore won't report a fault. Having said that, that still doesn't explain why it doesn't return to normal CVT mode when I put it back in D.

I've spoken to the garage at length about this this afternoon and made it very clear that I do want this resolved. They are going to speak to the techies at Nissan and see if they have any ideas so I'll see what, if anything, they come back with.

Re: No Power

Spoke to the garage yesterday and they have had a reply from the Nissan techies. Nissan say that they have had a couple of other reports of this happening and have started looking into it. So far all they know is that for some reason the gearbox is locking itself into a higher ratio, supposedly as a safetly feature to protect itself, but they have no idea why.

At this stage the only fix they can offer is to switch the car off for 10 seconds as this will allow the computer system to reset and then everything should fine. I'm sure I tried switching it off the first time this happened to me and it had no affect but perhaps I didn't leave it long enough to re-set. I'll try it again next time it happens and let them know.

I was quite surprised to get a response from Nissan so quickly and even more surprised to find that they are already looking into it. Their answer does not explain why switching back to D doesn't clear the problem though. You would assume that regardless of what gear ratio the gearbox is in in manual mode, that switching back to D should let the gearbox resume normal CVT operations. Their reply (or the garages interpretation of it) implied that the reason for this was that the gear ratio was locked in as safetly feature and nothing short of switching the car off for 10 seconds would clear it. This is not the case as the problem cleared itself once I reached the top of the hill so clearly Nissan have a little more investigating to do on this. Good to know that they are at least looking into it though.

Re: No Power

Hi Paul,

Once you reached the top of the hill the engine would not have been producing as much torque because the load would have decreased. This might have been the trigger for the CVT to release the "safety gearing" selection and have everything work normally again.

Let Nissan know when and what allowed your gearbox to go back to normal operation (if you haven't already) as it might help them with the diagnosis.

Re: No Power

Hi Kev,

You must be telepathic. That's exactly what the girl from Col Crawford said when she rang me yesterday.

I've given Nissan all the info I can think of. Just have to wait and see how long it takes them come up with a permanent fix.

Re: No Power

Greetings all. I placed a reply in the "CVT" thread a couple of months ago regarding this problem of loss of power. Mine was locked in high gear .I stopped at the bottom of my driveway then went to go up the hill but it seemed to have no power at all. It was transported to Nissan. The stepper motor that positions the pulley was in a high gear position. The mechanic could find no reason for it ,cleaned the contacts and it has'nt happened since. Luckily for me it happened at the bottom of my driveway. The annoying thing is that Nissan keep problems under their hat until you start jumping up and down. I had a problem with my parking sensors (see "erratic parking sensors") and after 3 attempts it was fixed by fitting MURANO sensors and they are now perfect. I hope their is no inherit problem with the T31 CVT stepper motors. The test of any service organization is how well they handle the difficult problems.
It would be good for this thread to go in the T31 PETROL section as it is mainly related to CVT.
Unfortunately some of these threads start off on a topic and get sidetracked onto something completely different.
