Richmond Range; 11th Jan 09.

What a fantastic day out, with great company.
Melinda & myself, along with our young bloke Brenden; met up with Greg & Lindy over in South Lismore.
After our intro's, & a bit of a yarn, we headed to Kyogle to meet Up with Scot & Wendy.
When we got there, they were waiting patiently.
After all the hello's were out of the way, the maps came out, to see where we were going to end up.
Image
We decided to head out of Kyogle towards Toonumbar Dam, which is a great spot for camping/fishing.
Heres a foto looking up the dam, from on top[ of the spillway. Image
we then went down below the spillway, heres a pic of our Exy below the sillway.
Image After this we followed Scot along a dirt track, till we came to a sign that said road closed, we decided to have a look at this.
We later found out that the bridge was washed out, but spotted a track leading across the creek.
Greg went first to check it out.
I havent got any fotos of him crossing, but he took some of Scot & Us crossing.
we followed this track till we came to "Peacock Creek" camp area, which might be a good spot for a campover.
Lunch at Peacock creek. (should call it peawilly creek; the censoring thingy doesnt like peacock.)Image
We carried on to Richmond Range Lookout, had a brief wee walk. Image
Boy is there some great views out that way.
Next stop was at Melanganee lookout. Image
What a view. Image
At one stage of the day, we were trying to figure out which way to head, so out came the map again.
Guess who was lost, our intrepid leader Scot thats who.
Image
We ended up heading for Mount Pickabeen, great country to drive through.
Wher we got down there, we found a bit of a hill to play on, Scot went first, followed by Melinda, Then Greg & Lindy

Heres the three Exys having a rest at Mount Pickabeen.
Image
After we left there, we all headed back towards Malenganee, then we took the lead towards Lismore on the boring blacktop.
When we got to Casino, Melinda & myself suggested to Scot, Wendy, Greg & Lindy, that it was getting a bit late, & instead of heading for our place for a cupp, they might like to go to the Lismore Workers Club for tea.
Which we all decided on.
Had a great meal, then Greg & Lindy headed for home, while Scot & Wendy came out home for a cuppa, before heading for home themselves.
A perfect end to a truly great day, with good company.
Looking forward to the next day out. emoticon

Great report John, Wendy was downloading the photos for the report and somehow the computer ate them and wont give them back so when our report goes on we have no pics to put with it emoticon

Off to the Richmond Ranges again. What a top spot - great scenery, good camping spots and some great company for what was an easy but very pleasant day out in the weeds.

John and Melinda's earlier post mentioned that a bridge had washed away - this is all that was left.

A shot of J&M using the by-pass across the creek bed

Here's Scot and Wendy in the drink. (I think we've got the record for the shallowest water crossing!?!?)

Image

Come for a bit of a drive through the Richmond Ranges State Forest

Looking forward to the next excursion - perhaps the Mystery Run in March in sunny QLD.

Thanks Scot for organising a great day

Re: Richmond Range; 11th Jan 09.

It’s Sunday morning and the alarm went off at 5.30 am. Normally a 5.30 am alarm means gotta go to work and it takes ages to drag ourselves out of bed but on a Sunday, that means only one thing - we’re going exploring again - so there’s no dragging or sleeping in.

John did ask whether our meet up time of 9.30 am was Queensland time or New South Wales time. I told him Queensland time of course because it’s a Queensland trip. Imagine if it was NSW time, we would have to have been up at 4.30 am and although this wouldn’t be a problem, it was nice to be able to sleep in to 5.30 am.

We left home at 7.00 am and refuelled, picked up breakfast and made our way down to Beaudesert and the Lions Road to Kyogle. We got there just after 9.00 am so picked up supplies for lunch.

Our meet up point was the information centre in Kyogle where John, Melinda and Brendan arrived shortly after us and then Greg and Lindy who we met for the first time. Unfortunately they didn’t get to meet Boris as he was feeling a little deflated on Sunday.

There was some discussion about where we would go and checking of maps and we first headed out to Toonumbar Dam. We had a look at the camping area and walked down the boat ramp to have a closer look at the lake. From here we went to the dam wall and walked out to the slip before driving around below the dam and a better look at the slip.

We followed the road and came to a sign saying Road Closed. As you do, we continued on to have a look and see whether it was really closed or not. Sure enough the bridge was out but there was a creek crossing which Greg tried first and of course John and I followed which meant we could continue. We have found that you don’t always believe the signs, they do lie sometimes.

We kept going and it was a very pleasant drive through the state forest and we stopped at Pea**** Creek camping area for some lunch. It was peaceful and looked like a great spot to come and camp one weekend.

From Pea**** Creek we backtracked a little and went along Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive and down the length of Richmond Range National Park. It was a nice drive and some great views from the top of the range.

We crossed the Bruxner Highway and stopped off at the Mallanganee Lookout, met some of the locals and checked out the communications towers.

We were going to see what the Mallanganee National Park had to offer in the way of tracks but ended up at Hogarth Range instead. We decided to have a look at the maps again and do some comparison to see if we could find where we were. (Melinda has some great pics of this.) Now, before you all comment about us getting lost - no way!! We never get lost, we always go exploring and we have discovered some amazing places using this method.

We decided to go to Mt Pikapene National Park because Greg remembered an old logging camp and that there were some good tracks around the area. The mention of good tracks had us jumping back in the cars and it wasn’t long before we were heading up a track that looked like it hadn’t been used in a long time. The grass was high on either side and in the middle so the Exey got another tummy tickle. We went first because we have a bash plate whereas the others didn’t so we could keep an eye and ear out for nasty surprises in the middle. We came to the top of a ridge and looked left and right. The sign said Coffee Creek Road. All we could see was grass. It looked like it had been years since anyone had come this way. Greg, John and I went for a walk to see if we could see where the track went but the long grass didn’t give way to a track so we told the ladies and decided that we’d head back to the rest area.

They must not get very many visitors to the rest area because the grass was long and the toilet shed certainly made using the facility interesting as it was on an extreme lean.

After a day of easy driving we were looking for any fun we could have so we found a little drop off and each had a turn trying out our skills.

It was getting late by now and we were going back to Lismore for a coffee before heading home. We went back and took a different route back via Deep Creek Road to the highway and came out just west of Mallanganee. John then took the lead back to Lismore.

John and Melinda had a great idea of having dinner in Lismore at a club. We said our goodbyes after dinner and then Wendy and I went back to their place for coffee before heading home. We left Lismore about 10.00 pm and had an interesting drive home up the Lions Road with all the bunnies, cows and even a tree across the road but arrived home safely at 12.30 am Monday morning.

Wow! What can I say. We had a fantastic day. It was easy driving but the company was wonderful and we explored some new areas.

Our sincerest thanks to John, Melinda and Brendan, and to Greg and Lindy for such a great day. They are perfect travel companions and Wendy and I are looking forward to our next trip with them.
