vibration from wheels after sand driving - solution I'd thought I would share this with other drivers - not xtrail specific, but it happened to us and was concerning until solved!
our drive home down the beach through both hard and soft boggy sand left our xtrail, and two other hilux's with vibrations coming from the front wheels. It was a bit rough going and a few heavy bounces, but I didn''t think it would cause any damage.
Our xtrail displayed the vibration immediately sometimes when braking and slight turns and then on the freeway it felt like we needed a wheel alignment - the steering wheel was shaking. The hilux's showed the problem on the freeway only.
It turned out there was a layer of tightly packed sand on the inside of the inner part of the steel rim which was causing the vibration.
Checked all 4 wheels as we found a layer of sand packed on the inside of all 4 rims. Once cleared (by hand and stick found on the side of the road :-) ) problem solved.

Re: vibration from wheels after sand driving - solution Cool, yep i have the same problem after driving in the sand.
When i pump my tyres back up i use the compressor to blow the sand out from inside the rim and brakes, however sometimes i have to run my hand around in there to dislodge the clumpy bits from the inside of the rim.
I thought the same thing the first time! Thought i had damaged something or knocked off one of those weights, but it was just the sand!

Re: vibration from wheels after sand driving - solution Had the same issue after driving in fine runny mud/dirt. Washed the car after a weekend in Halls Gap, which just made the mud run to the bottom of the wheel rim. Unfortunately I'd just had the first service before heading off for the weekend, so I though they'd buggered up the wheel alignment and so consequently took it back to the dealer. Dealer was very polite about it, but I still felt like a twit.
