Re: Oversized Tires on T30? Is it possible, anyone done it?

Hi guys,

Just a quick one in relation to this thread.

Im looking at getting Pirelli Scorpion A/T 235/65/R17 on a new set of 17" rims. Review on [sign in to see URL] shows that they are up there with some of the best. Plus i have a guy in Sydney that gets me cheap Pirelli tyres.

According to a tyre calculator the difference between my current stocks 215/70/15 & potential purchase of 235/65/17 is a) rolling radius difference is [sign in to see URL], b) circumference difference [sign in to see URL] and c) diameter difference is [sign in to see URL]

It also tells me that because of the difference in this that when im doing to 100km/h im actually doing [sign in to see URL]

My question for you intelligent people that know your Exy's more then I do, other then the km/h difference, is there anything else regarding these sizes that may cause an issue for me or the car for that matter.

After seeing the lift kit that "Jwilkes" refered to, I would most likely get that as well if the height clearance was an issue. I guess i should be more worried about the width??

I took the Exy offroad to Meryla State Forest on the weekend and it felt like I need bigger/ A/T tyres to get through some of the wet clay/mud areas. It handled it perfect but felt that grip was lacking a bit. Im trying to update the trips section of the forum with pics/review of the trails but still working out the photo upload part lol

Anyways any help would be much apprecitated.

Jay

Hi Jay,

As you mentioned, your standard tyre size is 215/70/15.
I have a Ti and my standard tyre size was 215/65/16. This is very close to the same (+0.5% bigger diameter).
Recently I have fitted 225/70/16 (+5.5% bigger diameter) which is the largest tyre I think will fit the Xtrail because one side rubbed on the inside of the wheel arch on full lock. A small adjustment to the plastic splash guard gave the extra clearance required. The clearance between the tyre and the front of the rear wheel arches on the outside was also close at only about 15mm.

My speedo is almost perfect by showing 99kph when GPS shows 101kph.

But your choice of 235/65/17 is +7.5% bigger in diameter and I think you could have clearance issues. The extra width (235mm v's 225mm) could easily rub on the inner splash guard on full lock and the tyre could be too close to the front of the rear wheel arches on the outside due to the 16mm diameter increase.

If you wish to go to the 17" rims then I suggest only a 225/65/17 because going down to a 235/60/17 would not give you enough sidewall depth to help off-roading. Many members who own T31's have mentioned very little choice of tyres available for the 17" rims and that might be something to consider for the future if your chosen tyres are not available next time you need a replacement set.

Cheers for the reply Kev.
I was thinking along those lines, that they might be a little too big.

I was just looking at Brett72's ride, which has 225/70r16 BFG all terrain tyres.

Im thinking maybe i should head down that path instead. It looks really good with those wheels and the 40mm lift kit.

Yeah i think that might be the way to go hey. Maybe some Geolanders or the BFG's. The BFG's look pretty sick actually.

And the speedo shouldnt be out that much either.

Gotta agree with [sign in to see URL] pictured inner wheel arch at the rear is mine.

]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

It was the biggest factor in stopping me getting a bigger tyre. I limited myself to 225/70/16 BFGs, and have also had rubbing on the inner engine trim as mentioned by Kev on full lock, fixed by some manipulation of the plastic.
Some "manipulation" of that metal lip pictured might also be posible (ie grinding it out) but how far do you really want to go?
The 17s will really limit your choice of tyre, as mentioned. A lot of guys with Pathfinders etc are all getting/ looking for 16 inch rims, purely cos the tyre availabilty is much better.

Possible to get a Pirelli off your mate, on 1 rim, and do a test fit?....I think the rear will be the drama.

Cheers

Edit Nice timing on your post! Just saw [sign in to see URL] BFGs look good, and fit well. They FIXED my speedo, according to [sign in to see URL] much spot on. 101km indicated at 100kmph on the speedo.

Thanks boys for replys.

Made my mind up. Ill go 16's. Easier, cheaper and more practical.

I think i will do a test on one wheel with the Pirelli and see how it goes.

Cheers.

There is another way,
you can source some as they say 'dished out rims' or with an offset that is set back towards the axle. This would poke the tyre out flush with the guard and give you the clearance desired to not rub on the plastic.

But then the possible rubbing of the outside of the tyre on the upper guard when the suspension is compressed would be the question.

Those BFG's are the very same as Dave (Robbo0001) has with the 50mm strut spacers. Just check out his ride thread |offset=74]here.

I've got the Geolandars in that size and the 50mm strut spacers and you check out mine |offset=37]here.

Found this picture [sign in to see URL] tyres on a T30.
Trying to contact owner to see if its wheel spacers, or deep dish mags. Looks good in my [sign in to see URL] flares and wider mud flaps to be legal.
