Oversized Tires on T30? Is it possible, anyone done it?

Hey Folks,
I am currently looking at a 2006 x-trail LE for my next car. I have done some pretty extensive research and bang for the buck, it's hard to beat the x-trail for features and utility. The one thing that I would like to have on the car is a slightly bigger set of tires with a higher side wall.

I am in Canada, and quite frankly our roads suck. During the winter we have pot holes you could lose a Yaris in. I almost lost another rim yesterday to a nasty one. So my question is this...

Can I fit a set of 235/70/17's onto the x-trail to replace the 215/65/17's that are on it now? This would give an inch of lift (2" diameter larger), and about and inch wider. Anyone ever done this? I did a search but only found one post related to over sized tires on a T31, which I believe is the next version of the x-trail. 2006 is the T30?
Thanks
TBK

Re: Oversized Tires on T30? Is it possible, anyone done it?

Yes of course it is possible but there are consequences, some legality related, some mechanically related...

1. You will need to make sure there is no rubbing of tyres on guards and suspension components in all wheel positions (up, down, steering left/right).
2. Because of the increased rolling weight there will be slightly more wear and stress on CV joints.
3. Because of increased rolling diameter your speedometer will be inacurate so 100kph will be faster.
4. Depending on your Canadian regulations for road registration and insurance you may be over the legally allowed oversized tyre compared to the original tyre size fitted.

Check all these out before purchasing to make sure you are covered.

Thanks for the reply. Your first point is the the one I am trying to confirm. I realize anything is possible, I was just hoping someone else has done it, so I know how big I can go without rubbing issues.

Canada has very relaxed rules for tire fitment. If you want to jack your rig 8" and roll on 33" mudders sticking 6" out of the wells, you are more than welcome to. emoticon

Anyone else? Anyone even seen a bigger set of tires on a set of stock 17" rims?

Have you approached a local tyre shop? They usually are fairly helpful and even if not familiar with a specific vehicle, should have a bit of an idea of what would fit (ie: Kev's point #4 above), and I would expect be willing to try your proposed combination to see if it is suitable (and doesn't rub on the guards or suspension). If one shop is not helpful, try another. emoticon

It's probably also worth mentioning in addition to #2 Kev mentioned above, that the performance and fuel economy will also be negatively affected - it will take more effort to get the larger wheels up to speed, and also more braking effort to stop them as there would be considerably more weight in each wheel. You may immediately feel throttle response to be more sluggish, but you will probably get used to it quickly and eventually not notice it unless you change back to normal size tyres.

Re: Oversized Tires on T30? Is it possible, anyone done it?

Hello guys. I hope this is the right thread to discuss about over-sized tires on T30.
I'm thinking of downgrading the factory 16" wheels to 15" after market wheels, since 15" tires have more choices and easy to find.
What is the maximum size for the tires to fit, and not rubbing or touching the strut base?
Have anyone fitted with 31" or 30" size tires on 15" wheels?
Currently my car has 225-70-16 which means the tires are 28".
Thanks.

Am a bit confused as to how did you come to this conclusion and tyre size emoticon

It's 16" rim which means it's a 16" tyre and referred to as such, so maybe if you tell us the tyre size you wanna get, it'll make things easier to understand.

He's talking about the outside diameter of the tyre Jalal.

Thanks Tony, I got it now, never had to measure the outside diameter in inches before LOL emoticon

Anyway, your current tyre size is actually 28.4" in diameter and the largest you can go in 15" tyres would be 235/75/15 which would make them 28.9" in diameter and these will throw your speedo out by 1.5% which is acceptable. They will also fill out the wheel arch by an extra 6mm which is acceptable and won't rub.

You can further experiment with different tyre sizes and the impact they may cause by using the tyre size calculator found in the technical section of our site ]HERE

Why do you particularly want to go to the "hardcore 4WD" sizing of tyres (ie: 31inch)??? If you're intending to fit mud-terrain, then the BFG mud-terains have already been fitted to factory 15inch wheels by another forum member (trying to find who the member was - will edit post when I find who it was!)

Yes Rich
There was also a member on the Yengo trip that had the muds on, they didn't look oversized though.
Like you, my memory is shocking to remember who it was.
I know for sure it was a silver T30.
