Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper
John,
I have had the back of my Xy off countless times, (as well as the front and inside, anyway)
As I recall, the bumper doesn't come into contact with any part of the towbar at all. In fact no where near it as the towbar is recessed into the chassis frame.
Have a look at this picture to see how basic the fitment is. It's just bolted to the back of the Xy and a couple of bolts underneath in the chassis rail.
The bumper is only held on by a couple of screws and some plastic clips, and these have bugger all sideways adjustment.
I honestly can't see how they can get it wrong.

Re:
Hi John,
I can't tell from your first pic if Nissan cut the whole square from the middle section of the bumper before fitting the towbar in place or not, if they haven't cut that whole piece in full, then the bumper won't sit correctly at all.
That's the way the T31 towbar is being fitted, meaning that whole centre piece needs to be cut out.

Re:
Thanks John, yes, it seems they have cut as they should and inserted the rubber surround as well, the top edge of the towbar neck/receiver is still very much close to the bumper, so it might be pushing it up. They might need to cut a bit more in that area, so the bumper doesn't sit on the receiver hitch at all.

Re:
Mine isn't the same either but only 2mm in it. Left side closer than the right.
I think its got to do more with the plastic on the tailgate rather than the bumper as the bumper fits perfectly to the rear guards.
The tailgate finisher over hangs one side more than the other giving me the 2mm difference. I think thats where everyone has the problem.
John, to remove the bumper there are 2 clips underside of the gooseneck near the spare wheel well.
2 bolts under black plastic cover plates when the tailgate is opened.
Behind the rear wheels there is a screw that that part of the bumper to the guard. The rear mudflaos have to come off and the black plastic flare trim that runs around the wheel arch has to be uncliped very carefully.
I'm pretty sure thats it, not much else if there is anything.
Its all visible.
One other thing that I have noticed on my tailgate and this may be part of the problem is that the adjustable bumpers that keep the tailgate off the body appear to be a little perished.
I can no longer screw them out so that they will stay there.
The thread on them seems to have stripped.
I'll show them on my next service and see what they say.
edit: more details about removing bumper

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper
John, have you heard anything further from Nissan on this?
Also, has anyone identified just what part of the current towbar is fouling the inside of the rear plastic bumper? I can agree with earlier comments that ALL T31s seem to have this problem to a lesser or greater degree IF the factory supplied towbar is fitted (yet the alignment/gapping everywhere is perfect on vehicles without a towbar).
Mine seems to be "lesser" rather than "greater" in this regard, but it IS noticeable and matches what's been posted here.
I'd be interested to attempt a fix myself, if I can be pointed in the right direction regarding what part of the metal towbar, or what part of the internal fillets/bracing etc in the bumper, (or both) that I might need to attack with an angle grinder.
Any hints from observations that you've made yourselves?
Jeff.
