Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

I have a T31 diesel with Nissan towbar and yes, I have noticed that mine is rubbing too. It seems the rear bar alignment is out on one side.

Going to have the dealer look at it next week...

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Hi fangios,
Ironically we have the same vehicle and colour. perhaps it only happens with electric blue T31's.
Anyway let your dealer know that my dealer (Grand Nissan) contacted Nissan who are looking into the problem. However i am in the process of writing to Nissan direct and sending photos of the damage.

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Well after much to and fro - it has been recognised by Nissan that some plastic moulding on the inside of the rear bumper is getting caught when the bumper is being replaced after a towbar has been fitted. This causes the rear bumper to mal-align. The guys at Grand Nissan have fixed my problem and Nissan know what needs to be done - so if you have problems, let your dealer know and they should be able to rectify.
Cheers

Re:

I am a new member but have been reading the articles for some time with interest and now look forward to being able to participate in some discussions.

I have a 2009 T31 ST-L Automatic White X-Trail that I purchased in November 2009 from a Nissan dealer in Western Australia.

Prior to the 1,000km service I reported that there appeared to be a problem with the rear bumper alignment.

I started to check out any X-Trail I came across and quickly noted that X-Trails without towbars were as expected and gaps all equal while those with towbars had the same problem as mine.

As part of my investigation I visited another Nissan dealer and noted that a few demo X-Trails in their yard all had towbars fitted without any problem. I went to the service section and spoke with the service manager who advised me that they had adopted a method of slightly grinding the holes on the towbar to allow it to be moved enough to allow the bumper to fit normally.

I contacted the original Nissan dealer service manager to pass on what I had learnt and suggest it may be worth a call to the other Nissan dealer prior to me getting the 1,000 km service so they could resolve the problem.

At the 1,000 km service they removed and refitted the bumper. When I went back to pick up the car after the service I walked up behind a white X-Trail and said to my wife that it was still the same. I'm hopeless at remembering number plates but she quickly informed me that it wasn't our vehicle. On checking our vehicle it still had the problem.

I went and got the service manager to have a look as this was an indication that it was a common T31 towbar problem. They took more photos to send through the Nissan support system as evidence.

Re:

John,
Was it at Nissan that had the towbars were fitted.
Some contract out their work to other installers.

Re: T31 Tailgate Rubbing on rear bumper

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the response. Yes the installation was a genuine Nissan towbar and installed by the Nissan dealer.

The official Nissan fix as explained to me was to cut away some additional plastic from the bumper, but the dealers fix involved slightly grinding/filing holes to allow the towbar to be adjusted. The amount described was about the 2mm the nib of a ballpoint pen. Whatever they are doing appears to be a working as all the their X-Trails I have seen have a uniformly fitted bumper.

Every T31 X-Trail with a tow bar I have seen other than those with the workaround mentioned are pushed down and out on the left and up to the point where the back hatch is either nearly or is scraping the bumper on the right hand side.

I'm only new but if I can find out how to post pictures will post some of my X-Trail bumper.
