THE SIMPLE GUIDE TO INSTALLING A SUB/AMP IN YOUR T30 X-Trail
Recently I've found it hard to find a definitive guide to installing a subwoofer and amp combo in my X-trail, so after a few hours of experimenting around i figured it out.
here's how i did it...
I'm assuming you already have an amp, sub, wiring kit and a frequency converter.
1. INSTALLING THE POWER WIRES
In the wiring kit, you'll have a wire that has a fuse on the end (usually red), this attaches onto your POSITIVE terminal of your battery, then this wire needs to travel from the battery, to the +12V connection of your amp.
To get the wire from you engine bay to the back of your car, trace the wire past the air box, and under the bonnet and run it in between the side panel and the pillar of the passenger side, from there the wire should go under the carpet, all the way back to the boot.
Then you should have a black wire that connects to the ground connection of your amp. This attaches onto the chassis of you car. Lift up the carpet and the boot floor, to expose 2 bolts, attach this wire to one of these bolts.
3. REMOVING FRONT FASCIA
To remove the front panel is actually easier to do than you think... Its held on by one bolt in the lefthand drink cooler, and a series of clips.
take out the insert in the drink cooler and get a socket with an extension and undo that bolt, then get a flat head screwdriver to pry off the panel. Don't be afraid to use a bit of force, you need to.
The entire unit comes out with the 4WD system, defogger, aircon vents and head unit
2. INSTALLING THE SIGNAL WIRES
Now moving onto the signal wires...
firstly the thin black wire is the remote power wire, that tells the amp to turn on when the head unit is turned on. This goes from the "rem" connection of you amp, to splice with a wire on the head unit. This wire is the RED one in the middle of the loom.
the loom is set up so that on the left hand side, the wires are for the front speakers (left: +ve and -ve, and right: -ve and +ve), and the right side are the rear speakers (same 4 wires apply) and the remaining 4 wires in the middle are for various other things, but the RED wire is the one we are interested in. Using some wire strippers, pull back some coating and attach the remote turnon wires from the amp here. Cover it with some electrical tape to insulate.
Now the harder part...
The output signal wires come from the input connection of the amp and go to the back of the head unit and splice on (in the same fashion as the remote wire) to the REAR speaker channel. But you need a device called a frequency converter, a small box with bare wires as an input, and 2 RCA plugs as an output. The wires from the amp (which should be RCA - red and white) connect into the box, and the 4 input wires splice onto the rear channel speaker wires. On the head unit, the wires with a black stripe on them are the negative wires, splice the black wires onto these and the same with the plain colour wires and the red wires of the converter. Once again, cover all these wires with electrical tape to insulate them.
Put the fascia back on, and you should have everything working!
Hope I could help

Re: THE SIMPLE GUIDE TO INSTALLING A SUB/AMP IN YOUR T30 X-Trail
Thanks for this guide mate, however instead of running the wires exposed like that from the engine bay and risk having them crushed with time by the door, there are access points from each side of the firewall into the car.
On the passenger side there is a rubber grommet which will come out behind the glovebox and on the driver's side there is another access point and also a rubber grommet which will come-out just above the brake pedal.

Re: THE SIMPLE GUIDE TO INSTALLING A SUB/AMP IN YOUR T30 X-Trail
agreed, but in the interest of saving time and alot of hastle, i just decided to have them run where they do, i don't see that the provide a problem with the door.
i tried to trace them through the aircon lines and even the clutch lines, but found it too hard with the limited time and tools i possess.
and since theres no damage and the wires are neatly hidden (i fixed them up more since the photos) i found it ok to have them run that way. and besides, there is a fair bit of space between where the door shuts (a good 5-7mm - enough for a heavily insulated cable to run through)
i should also refer you to the title of the thread "the SIMPLE guide"
messing with the firewall and such seems a fair bit advanced and time consuming, especially as engine mechanics are my specialty and not auto electronics
thanks for the feedback, in the future ill re run it through the firewall!

Re: THE SIMPLE GUIDE TO INSTALLING A SUB/AMP IN YOUR T30 X-Trail
And you don't really need to mess the entire set-up to correct what you have done, just disconnect the power cable and run it from inside the car out into the engine bay through the firewall on the passenger side.
Regardless of this guide being "simple" or not, you need to display how it can be done correctly and safely instead of illustrating a hazardous modification.
The rule of thumb when doing any modification (and I have done many) is that if you don't have the needed time and tools to do it properly, don't attempt to start it at all. Plan it carefully and then start it when you have plenty of time on your hands, so you know you can finish it. Un-expected things can happen during any modification, so you need to be prepared for that too.
I don't favour the approach of doing things in a hurry and worry about fixing them later.

Re: THE SIMPLE GUIDE TO INSTALLING A SUB/AMP IN YOUR T30 X-Trail
WHOA! my mate did the exact same thing cept on the drivers side in his VN commondore. i told him he was dodgy and offered to help and he said it was fine. the cable (with vibrations and moving around a tiny bit) wore though in about 5 months and blew his alternators voltage regulator and melted the power wire and the amp fuse.
i hope all your splices/piggybacks are soldered also. like Wood said, better have a fire extinguisher. its good you did it all yourself without any auto elec backround but it appears you got lazy. not having a stab at you just concerned about you and your passengers safety. there is a grommet on the fire wall (behind the glovebox as Jalal said) you can stick you head/arm under the dash and see/feel it easy, you can see it even easier from the engine bay. get a stanley knife and cut a cross on the grommet and push the wiring though and it should still seal pretty good.
Whats it sound like anyway?

For your own good and safety mate. Shows how concerned members of our community are when they see something like that done.
So, how's the sub?
